ln 9 Tom Costa 116, Korea. Jim Bean 78, FECOM. Jack O'Brien 346, Korea. Jim Kolis 116, Korea. 1 M W if f A. Jim Martin 47, Alaska. Post World War II saw the emergence of the communists which threatened democratic countries of the world. With it came new kinds of military operations called Police Action in Korea and Cold War in Germany. Many graduates drafted into the service of their country would have their futures altered because of it. The staff of the 1952 Cathe- dralogue dedicated their efforts to Father Thomas Nolan. For Pat Gamgan 216, Germany. Don Shea 217, Alaska. Zeke Schafer 918, Alaska. twenty years Father Nolan had taught history and been a friend and counselor to Cathedral boys. Among the very time-consuming duties assigned to him, he still found time to run an intramural sports program, which became one of the enduring memories carried away by many graduates of the school. Father Francis DesLauriers be- came Treasurer ofthe school. He was one of nine new arrivals. Father Francis DesLauriers, C.S.V. Father DesLauriers was another of those who gave many years to Cathedral and Grwn. He arrived in 1951 and remained until ill health forced him to leave his post in 1962. Most of these years were spent as treasurer of the school. This was never an easy fob since both Cathedral and Griffin operated on the thin edge oflhnancial disasterfor all the years of their existence. He was a familiar presence to most students through the years. His an- nouncement calling on anyone who had tuition to bring it to the ofhcev was afamiliar and often repeated message. Father DesLauriers was another of those who had the ability to meet students on their level and to become their friend and counselor. He too had been asked by his community to put these talents to use and served as one of the most popular of scholastic Mastersfor the Via- torians attending college in Chi- cago. By 1962 his health was shat- tered though he continued to serve his communityfaithfully un- til his death in February of1971. ?f-

'E' we-'af Father Leahy with Sodality group. MVT' Fr. Gerald J. Leahy Key Club members with Father Leahy. ati. 5 4 Father Gerald Leahy, C.S.V. Exceptfor a period offour years, Father Leahy has spent his entire priestly lie at Cathedral and Grjfn High Schools. Over a period of 30 years Father Leahy has taught business sub- jects, English and religion. He di- rected choral music in his early years at Cathedral and helped with the Variety Shows and mod- erated many other student activi- ties over the years, including the Student Council which he guided in a complete revision of its con- stitution andfunctions. But it is as moderator ofthe Key Club that he is remembered by so many students who have attended the two schools. Father Leahy intro- duced this service organization and guided its growth to the point where it was often the most vis- ible and effective organization in the school. Key Club members became renowned in the City for their willingness to take part in and initiate activities that bene- jited many in the Springheld community. Long a modelfor other Key Clubs, the Grdjin boys have excelled at State and Na- tional Conventions. Fr. Leahy has also at various times directed the religious lyfe of the school. The wehfare ofthe in- dividual was always important to this priest, always one of the most available offaculty members. The 1984 school year ends his many years of service to the Grwfin community. He will be sorely missed.
