Post World War II saw the emergence of the communists which threatened democratic countries of the world. With it came new kinds of military operations called Police Action in Korea and Cold War in Germany. Many graduates drafted into the service of their country would have their futures altered because of it. The staff of the 1952 Cathe- dralogue dedicated their efforts to Father Thomas Nolan. For Pat Gamgan 216, Germany. Don Shea 217, Alaska. Zeke Schafer 918, Alaska. twenty years Father Nolan had taught history and been a friend and counselor to Cathedral boys. Among the very time-consuming duties assigned to him, he still found time to run an intramural sports program, which became one of the enduring memories carried away by many graduates of the school. Father Francis DesLauriers be- came Treasurer ofthe school. He was one of nine new arrivals. Father Francis DesLauriers, C.S.V. Father DesLauriers was another of those who gave many years to Cathedral and Grwn. He arrived in 1951 and remained until ill health forced him to leave his post in 1962. Most of these years were spent as treasurer of the school. This was never an easy fob since both Cathedral and Griffin operated on the thin edge oflhnancial disasterfor all the years of their existence. He was a familiar presence to most students through the years. His an- nouncement calling on anyone who had tuition to bring it to the ofhcev was afamiliar and often repeated message. Father DesLauriers was another of those who had the ability to meet students on their level and to become their friend and counselor. He too had been asked by his community to put these talents to use and served as one of the most popular of scholastic Mastersfor the Via- torians attending college in Chi- cago. By 1962 his health was shat- tered though he continued to serve his communityfaithfully un- til his death in February of1971. ?f-
