Fr. J. W. Sheils The class of 1947 numbered 84, the largest class to graduate from the school in its history. Among the accomplishments of this class was a first place in the Downstate Catholic Conference in football. Unfortunately, the team was elim- inated before the State Tourna- ment. Brother Drolet had begun tutoring students in the grade schools in the summer, and the increasing size of the band began to reflect his hard work. The yearbook for 1947 shows many pictures of the variety show for that year. A clown band, can-can dancers, a chorus line and what looks like a group of human daisies indicate that this variety show certainly had variety. One also notes that academic life was not being ignored at Cathedral. An active Science Club, as well as the hard work of the Chimes and Downstate Catholic Conference champions. Above right: Biology. Right: Physics, Cathedralogue staffs, testifies to interests beyond the playing field The Parents' Club continued its fine work and continued to ex- pand its support of all aspects of the school programs, especially the band, music department and the library. The PTA was a chief support of the annual variety shows.

The I947-48 year would be the last year of Father Harbauer's ten- ure as principal. Father F. E. Wil- liams and Father Joseph Meara were also serving their last years at Cathedral. Their combined ser- vice equaled more than twenty years. However, most of the rest of that year's staff would remain - a unique experience for the school, as the staff tended to change quite a bit each year. Among those who joined the staff that year was Mr. Luke Gleason, who took over the duties of coach. Mr. Gleason would give many years to coaching and teaching at Cathedral and other local schools, and he is still a prominent figure in Springfield. The many pictures of the I948 variety show attest to the con- tinued care lavished on its pro- duction. Also seen in the year- book are the first glimpses of the famous cafeteria, which bears a striking resemblance to better pri- son dining halls. Eighty seniors graduated at commencement exercises in June. Fr. Brown rode herd. Only the bestfor the prisoners
