The war began to have an ever greater impact on the Cathedral staff and student body as the 1943-44 school year got under- way. Before the year ended, Father Mayer would leave to be- come an Army Air Force Chap- lain. Mr. Corcoran, the coach, also resigned to join the armed services and was succeeded by Mr. John Hendricks. In looking at the class pictures of the war years one also sees students in the uniform of the various services. Over 500 Cathedral graduates and students served their country in World War ll. For a time, the band was with- outa director, but kept practicing with the help of some of the older dral parish, was hired to replace Fr. Mayer and, together with Frs. McCleary and Williams, staged the Variety Show of 1944. The students and faculty spent the year in various activities to support the war effort. One major project was the selling of war bonds. Successive and successful efforts, under the direction of Father Joseph Meara, resulted in a great deal of local enthusiasm for the Cathedral drive. The school also became a focal point in efforts at disaster training, civil- ian training, first aid classes, etc. This was the first year in which Cathedral and the two academies, Ursuline and Sacred Heart, com- bined for graduation ceremonies 1 ,'V, ag ul-.. .42 A-Q. The 1944-45 school year con- tinued to be overshadowed by the war. The Viatorian staff had been cut to fourteen and all were des- perately needed in the classrooms While there was a clear need for construction of a new high school, the Bishop decided that the time was not yet right for such an undertaking. Instead, he pur- chased the present school for 541,500 from the school district. Remodeling, which quickly doubled the purchase price. be- gan. The remodeling was de- manded if the school was to maintain its accreditation. Much of the work was done by the staff of the school. 1941-42 Faculty Fr. James Sees Bro. Thomas B. Nolan Bro.
