Kolis Cathedral and Grdjin High Schools have a long tradition of producing talented and creative individuals in the arts. One such alumnus is Jim Kolis, Cathedral class of 216. Jim actually began using his artistic abilities while attending Cathedral, hand painting window streamersfor the Fisher Grocery Stores and collaborating on the development of the first Cathedral Yearbook. Several members of the Cathedral faculty, in particular Jim s mentor, Fr. Noonan, realized Jim 3 gin and urged him to pursue his artistic talents. Upon graduating from Cathedral, Jim not onlyjoined the National Guard, but also attended Layton Art School in Milwaukee, Wisconsin receiving a partial scholarship from the Polish Fine Arts Club. Before completing his graduate education at Layton, Jim was drafted into the U. S. Army in 1951 where he attended the Engineering School at Ft. Belvoir, Virginia. Soon Jim was attached to the U.S. Air Force and sent overseas during the Korean Conflict where he not only produced maps but saw tempo- rary duty with the U. S. Coast Guard, responsible-for helping establish a LORAN navigational station in Korea. Honorably discharged in 1953, Jim worked for Peoria Engraving and later moved back to Springfield where he married his wyfe, Bea and furthered his career as a graphic artist with a local advertising agency. In 1965 Jim began his own business in Springfield, Commercial Art Studio, where he remains today practicing his talent as a graphic artist. Since that time Jim and Bea have raised Eve daughters, all of whom attended Sacred Heart Academy. and a son who is also a Grwn Alumnus. In the Spring of1983, Jim volunteered his services, time and talent to produce this 50 Year Book. Jim not only designed this book and completed the physical production but was compelled to review and research every date, name and event for accuracy. This book has been a labor oflovefor Jim and the results of his efforts are evident by the caliber and quality of this piece. Patrick Anderson
