New freshmen entered, and courses were added for the sea- soned sophomores. Brothers Ger- ald Lamarre, Joseph Drolet and John Brown, all of whom would have a profound influence on Cathedral High, arrived to aug- ment the faculty. Science and commercial courses had appeared in the curriculum. Brother Drolet soon formed a drum and bugle corps, which before a year had passed had become a full scale school band. Before many years had passed, Brother Drolet began the minstrel and variety shows that became major events in Springfield and are still remem- bered with awe by those gradu- ates who were part of them and the audiences who saw them. By the time the class of 1934 had becomejuniors, four new classrooms were carved out of part of the old church, and the remaining area became a gym- nasium and assembly room. Six Viatorians joined the faculty: Fathers Stanley Swikoski, Thomas Nolan, Martin Lennartz and Brothers John Toolan, Charles Carlon and R. Boysen. Three Viatorians were trans- ferred. 'Brother Drolet followed the band, walking behind the rows of spectators jumping up occasionally to shout words of encouragement to them. Begin- ning with a Drum and Bugle Corps, he soon took charge of the band begun by Rev. Croake of the Cathedral parish and by 1932 CBHS had itsfirst band. Brother also began minstrel shows which developed into the annual Variety Shows that would be associated with Cathedral High School as long as it existed. After leaving Cathedral, Brother served many years in Peoria where he again began a long tradition of Variety Shows and Band pedormances. Brother Drolet returned to Cathedral in 1945 and remained until 1952 and resumed direction of the Band and Variety Shows. He was one of the jirst faculty members as- signed to Gorman High School in Las Vegas where once again he founded the schools bandpro- gram. In his sixties Brother was ordained a permanent Deacon, thefrst religious brother to be so ordained in the world. For fve years he served as the 'pastoru of the small parish in Gabbs, Nev- ada. Brother now lives in semi- retirement in Las Vegas, but still hebs out at Gorman High School and St. Viator parish. GJ
