The State Journal-Register Springfield, Illinois Sunday, May 15, 1983 Page 23 Griffin tudents and alum prepare two anniversaries Grlffln High School students, past and present, are preparing for a unique, year-long gold and sllver jub- llee. The celebration will mark the 50th anniversary of the first graduating clas of Cathedral High School in 1934 and the 25th anniversary of the found- ing of Griffin High School at its West Washington Street location ln 1959. ln 1930, Bishop James Griffin of the Springfield Diocese called for the es- tablishment of a Cathollc boys' hlgb school ln Springfield. The brothers of the Clerlcs of St. Viator were invited to become administrators and faculty. By fall1930,classes were being held for 90 freshmen students ln three rooms of Cathedral Grade School. ln fall 1940, students and teacher moved to the old St. Mary's Grade School at 7th and Monroe. Another freshman class was added each year. The first Cathedral Boys' High School graduation ceremony was held in 1934. After the first 10 years, the student body, almost 300 strong, was in need of new quarters. The school moved again, this time into the old Converse School on the city's north side, leased by Bishop Griffin from the Springfield school district. The converted grade school remained home to Cathedral Boys until the construction and dedica- tion of the new Bishop James A. Griffin High School in 1959, exactly 25 years ago. Paul 0'Shea, Cathedral class of '56, is general chairman for the jubilee plannings committees. Tom McDer- mott, Cathedral '42, and Pat Sheehan, Griffin '70, are co-chairrnen. The jubilee will emphasize a half- century of Cathedral-Griffin's tradi- tion of excellence, 0'Shea said. We're having meeting about once a month, getting ready for the jubilee. Everybody seems to be doing their job, and with enthusiasm, which is what we Kathie Sass want We want this celebration to be a lot of fun. Activities will be held throughout the year, and committees have already scheduled several events for alumni and students. The kick-off activity will be in Sep- tember -- an outdoor mas on the high school lawn for students, alumni, past and present faculty, and families asso- ciated with Cathedral-Griffin over the years. The mass should be really huge, 0'Shea said. Through the alumni asso- ciation, we have the names and ad- dresses for about 5,000 former val, music and drama presentations and a spring dinner dance as the high- light of Reunion Weekend in July 1984. Special observances are being planned for classes graduated every 10 years and 25 years since 1934. In observance of the dual anniver- sary, a logotype and special stationery have been created. We're also publishing a souvenir booklet for alumni, Paul said. It will be a kind of keepsake, summarizing the history of the school's annversary year, and it will have a directory of graduates. We'll be contacting alumni soon to take orders. Pm getting a great deal of feedback already - everybody seems en- thused, 0'Shea said. The alumni as- sociation volunteers are doing fairly well. Each class has its committee doing lots of calling. People are volun- teering to help, too. We had a booth set up at the mostaccioll dinner this year. .s as X th. 1 it -'--i-S-P:,'G sl.. .b , Paul 0'Shea Tom McDermott P211 Sheehan students, and we hope as many as possi- ble will come. All past and present fac- ulty have been invlted, too. I'm sure a lot of the alumni would like to see their former teachers. Other events will include a fall festi- it and lots of people signed up. Cathedral or Griffin graduates who have not been contacted or who wish to volunteer can call the Griffin office, 546-6518, or contact Griffin principal, the Rev.
