The Griffin High School Board The effects of Vatican Council II on American Catholics were pronounced, not only in the litur- gical and theological changes that they experienced at Sunday Mass, but in the changes that began to appear in the schools attended by their children. The crisis of faith felt by so many Catholics had its counterpart in what might be called the crisis of Catholic edu- cation. A re our schools any longer 'relevant'? was a phrase voiced in many quarters. An even more critical question was, Are they viable? Can we afford to keep them open as fewer sisters, brothers, and priests are available to offset the increased cost of lay teachers' salaries? There were very few Catholic secondary schools in the country in the early l960's that escaped the necessity of facing these questions. The Council proclaimed the fu- ture as the time of the laity. Most Catholic school systems realized that greater involvement by the laity was the key to future suc- cess. GriffinHigh School's first Board was formed by then princi- pal Father Heitjan in 1970. lt was an advisory board and included pastors, parents and faculty. The present Board is a govern- ing board and was constituted in the 1978-79 school year by the late Bishop Joseph McNicholas. This Board was made up of members appointed by the Bishop and included pastors, parents and non-parents who were interested in helping Griffin High School. The principal and assistant prin- cipal have traditionally been ex- officio members of the Board. The duties of the Board members include the setting of school policies and the review of policy matters. The Board has several standing committees: the Finance Committee, which among other tasks prepares the budget for Board Review and ap- provalg a Committee for Public Relationsg and a Buildings and Grounds Committee, which con- cerns itself with repairs, mainte- nance and capital improvements to the school plant. The Board meets monthly in the school library. Terms of the membership are staggered, with each member serving a three-year term. One year must elapse before a member can be reappointed to the Board. Vacancies are filled by a Nominating Committee of Board members. Their recom- mendations are reviewed by the Board and then sent to the Bishop, who makes the formal appointment. Mr. Paul O'Shea C561 is the current President of the Board. Mr. Leon Mizeur C613 is Vice-President and Mrs. Chris- tine Kratzer is Secretary.
