CATHEDRAL-GRIFFIN ALUMNI ASSOCIATION As one reads over the records, it seems clear that there have been several attempts over the long his- tory ofthe two schools to orga- nize the alumni. Until last year, however, none of these efforts has proved successful. In late 1982 Father Erickson and Mr. William Pinky McHenry, Chairman of the Public Relations Committee of the Griffin School Board, met to lay the groundwork for an Alumni Association. They en- listed the help of Mr. Dan Cadi- gan, '57, to serve as a general chairman of the alumni organiz- ing effort. Mr. .Iohn Eck, '58, and Mr. Leon Mizeur, '61, would join Mr. Cadigan as assistant chair- men. Mr. McHenry was instru- mental in working our an organi- zational plan for a campaign to update alumni records, and a general meeting was called in De- cember, 1982. At this meeting, held in the Griffin cafeteria, group chairmen were chosen for each five years of the schools' history, and eventually fifty men were enlisted to be responsible for compiling updated lists of ad- dresses for their classmates. These lists were first used to invite alumni and their families to a picnic held at Griffin on the last Sunday of July, 1983. Food, drinks and games were enjoyed by about 100 to 150 people who at- tended this kick-off event for the new organization. Paralleling the jubilee activi- ties has been a vigorous effort by many alumni to streamline the Cathedral! Griffin alumni or- ganization. Pinky McHenry de- veloped the first alumni picnic in July, 1983, to help stimulate alumni organizational efforts. Equally as important, the alumni rejuvenation has rein- forced the loyalty and dedica- tion that former students have toward Griffin High School. This willingness to support cath- olic secondary education in gen- eral - and Griffin High School in particular -- will be indis- pensable as thetschool continues its Tradition of Excellence into the 21st century. In the spring of 1984 the first alumni bulletin was prepared by Father Erickson and Father Harris, who currently serves as editor, and was sent to approxi- mately 4,500 former students, f..-ff '.-,-. 7 ,f- '7 teachers and friends of Cathedral and Griffin. A second issue was mailed in July, 1984. lt is planned to have at least three issues each year, hopefully appearing in Oc- tober, March and July. Another feature of the Alumni Association is the unique dues structure for the organization. All former students have been invited to contribute one dollar for each year that has passed since their graduation from Cathedral or Griffin, and this amount serves as their membership dues. To date over 532,000 has been received from alumni of the two schools. This money has been used for the various educational programs of the school. An updated list of do- nors has appeared in the alumni bulletins and will continue to ap- pear in all future issues. A great deal of work by many people has laid the foundation for what is felt will be a permanent Alumni Association of Cathedral- Griffin graduates. The response from alumni has been great, and there is every indication that the organization is here to stay and will continue to play an ever- effective role in the life of the school. -- .
