Solomon Geo, Trotter Andrea Berryman Alena Swagiiieyer Robin Cooper Lowell Brosamerjoined the staff as Business Manager as the 1980 school year got under way. Miss Barb Danner, Gene Felchner, Mrs. Mary Patton, Jo- seph Solomon. George Trotter, Andrea Berryman, Alene Swag- meyer and Robin Cooper were new teachers. It was in the 1980 school year that Griffin once again saw the culmination of a year's prepara- tion for a North Central Visita- tion. Thirty-two men and women from public and private secon- dary and college-level institutions arrived in late February to evalu- ate the school and the self- evaluation process carried on by the faculty, parents and students over the previous year. In its final report to Father Erickson the vis- iting committee stated that: We found Griffin High School to be a school of high academic stan- dards, good discipline, and deep pride in its heritage and tradition as the Catholic high school for boys in Springfield. An evalua- tion of the type carried out by an accrediting agency such as the North Central Association is meant to check both positive and negative aspects of a school pro- gram. The primary function of a visiting committee is to offer ob- T it Norlh Central Association said A-OK'C jective advice for improvement. The administration and staff of Griffin were praised for their ac- complishments and challenged by the committee to make even greater improvements as the school moved into the eighties. Over the years Griffin's band had won many awards. ln this school year they won the Christ- mas Parade Contest and placed second in the Music Contest held at Mattoon. The Art Department began to make its presence felt in the schools. Mr. Ron Gregoire, who established the department, began to decorate the halls with some fine work by his students.

Coach Fleischli led the varsity football Cyclones to a perfect lO- 0 season and an unprecedented fourth consecutive City Cham- pionship. The Capital Conference title was also theirs, though things did not go their way on the State level. Nineteen players were voted All City Honors. The golf team also had a perfect l0-O record and the cross country team was judged by many to be the best in the history of the program. The varsity basketball team were City Co-champions and took the Re- gional Championship. Coach Bill Nonneman's baseball Cyclones recorded a 13-6 season in l979. Practicingfor Vimoryr X Cvclones making waves. filgitlfill iz uni R21 Robin Cooper was the new head coach of the varsity football team and led the players to a winning 8-3 season and a spot in the playoffs. The golf team swept the field of opponents taking first place in the Belleville, Peoria. Drumming to a winning beat. Quincy and Decatur Tourna- ments and went on to take the City, Sectional and District titles. Finally they brought home the State Championship and finished the year with an overall l7-l rec- ord. There were 203 graduating se- niors in 1980.
