' 1 a t GRIFFIN HIGH SCHOOL QIIIFFIIV f'77'44dfa,,ag5'fC6Muce 1625 W, WASHINGTON SY. SPRINGFIELD, IL 62702 Dear Friends of Cathedral-Griffin, The academic year 1983-84 has been a unique experience and a real milestone for the Catholic High School for boys in SpringHeldxCathedral Boys High School and now, Griffin High School. During this double-anniversary year, we have cele- brated the golden anniversary of the Hrst graduation class of 1934 and the silver anniversary of the building of GrifHn High School. There is so much to be grateful for. The more than half century tradition of Cathedral-Griffin is a tradition of excellence because of the outstanding effort of all the people who have gone before us-Bishop GrifHn, the founder of Cathedral Boys, Bishop O'Connor, the builder of Griffin, Bishop McNicholas, stro and fund-raiser for GrifHn, the Viatorians, the la parents and our many frie div ' ',i. I ng supporter ' y staff the student nds down throu h ersity and man h s, their g the years. There has been amazing y c anges, countless people and programs, activities, celebrations, athletic competitionsxtremendous cooperative efforts at crucial times, e.g., when it came time to build a new school in 1959, the entire Catholic community of Springfield responded. That community has responded generously with Hnancial support through GrifHn Sundays, through the 83,000,000 High School Drive, and most recently, through the Grst annual Catholic High School Appeal. Through it all there has been a commitment to academic excellence, there has been a camaraderie and good spirit reflected in our strong sports programs, there has been the Christian atmosphere and dedication to moral principles. While I am personally grateful to so very many alumni and friends who have given generously of time, talent and money during the anniversary year, I must single out one man, Paul O'Shea '56, who has served as General Chairman of the Anniversary Year Committee. Paul 's dedication and work have been tireless. With- out him, the many events and wonderful experiences simply could not have happened. We all owe him eternal gratitude. With thanksgiving to God and to all of you for all that has been, we look to the future knowing we can count on you and the new generations of Cyclones yet to come. Together we stand ready to meet the challenge of the future in the cause of Catholic education. Wishing all ofyou and your families God 's gracious blessing, I am, Sincerely yours in Chri A gif' gl-. Reverend Robert Erickson, C.S.V. Principal SI, 'MCI ! .V.,. . .,., .

n 1930 the country was in the midst of a de- pression, yet in the summer of that year Bishop James Griffin decided that the bad times should no longer delay a plan to which he was com- mitted. Springfield had two Catholic secondary schools for girls, Ursuline Academy and Sacred Heart Academy, but there was no provision made for the sons of Catholic families who were of high school age. Bishop Griffin an- nounced plans to open such a school and stated that it would be known as Cathedral Boys' High School. He invited the Clerics of St. Viator, popularly known as the Viatorians, to staff the proposed school. !Ar0,WowJsm4wmr2naf QD. syn sqllhwdv
