Bro. Bolser worked studenl to :he bone. The 1969-70 school year brought several new teachers to the faculty. Brother Thomas Kass who would have a second term at Griffin as Father Kass, Mr. Cor- bett, Mr. Hattendorf, Mr. Kohl- rus, the new band director, Mr. Liencke, Bro. McBride, Mr. Nonneman, Bro. Rice, Bro. Wen- dell, and Mr. Tom Lavin who is still a member of the faculty were all new to the school. The football team had a much better year and once again took City and Conference titles. The basketball team had a 3-19 season but the baseball team was headed for another championship as the school year closed. Cyclones ran away with City and Conference Titles. Bro. T. Kass E. Corbett Griffin had been operating with deficits for some years and the sal- aries of both the lay and religious teachers were low. The pastors of the Springfield parishes, realizing the importance of Griffin High School to the Catholic commu- nity, met and made several deci- sions that would help the school. They agreed to raise money to take care of the 1970-71 deficit and suggested the formation of a school board. An Advisory Board was set up, the forerunner of the Governing Board that directs the affairs of the school today. The school year had opened with 716 students. One hundred seventy E graduated- W. wif' Graduation breakfast was not at Twany lv. Land of the Rising Sun was the theme for the prom that year. The prom had moved out of the school gym but remained elabo- rate and judging by the pictures in the yearbooks, were very much enjoyed. Thanks to the pastors of the Springfield parishes, the financial pressures on Father Heitjan and the Board were at least temporar- ily relieved, though the lack of adequate funds was never entirely missing from the scene. One hundred seventy received their di- plomas at year's end. While the faculty worried about what was to come, the school year continued normally. The football team again took City and Confer- ence championships but again the basketball team had a very disap- pointing season. Golf, swimming, track and baseball, however, had very good seasons. These were years when home- coming was the highlight of the first semester. No one had yet thought to outlaw bonfires and gathering the material for this yearly event called for greater and greater ingenuity. Elaborate preparations made the prom enjoyable. A pile ofingenuity up in-flames. l A ritual mating call came in the form ofsqueeling tires.
