Rice, Bro. Wen- dell, and Mr. Tom Lavin who is still a member of the faculty were all new to the school. The football team had a much better year and once again took City and Conference titles. The basketball team had a 3-19 season but the baseball team was headed for another championship as the school year closed. Cyclones ran away with City and Conference Titles. Bro. T. Kass E. Corbett Griffin had been operating with deficits for some years and the sal- aries of both the lay and religious teachers were low. The pastors of the Springfield parishes, realizing the importance of Griffin High School to the Catholic commu- nity, met and made several deci- sions that would help the school. Maybe they did. . . maybe they didn 't. CVYHEDR Cathedral ofthe Immaculate Conception, scene ofman-1' Cathedralf Griffin graduation ceremonies. Sacred Heart X Grwn yearbook debut. One unusual event of the year was a Faculty Appreciation Day which brought many alumni and public figures to honor former teachers. As a result of the dinner held on this occasion, the impetus came to begin working on estab- lishing an alumni association. It did not prove to be permanent but some of the work done served as a basis for the efforts made last year to accomplish the same pur- pose. ln April all were saddened by the death of Brother Schoffman who had suffered a lengthy illness from cancer. This was the first year in which Sacred Heart and Griffin began to work together on the year- book. The yearbook that year fea- tured full color end sheets show- ing students of both schools -dressed in uniforms, caps and gowns, etc., representing all as- pects of school life. lt was by far the most sophisticated yearbook that the school had ever done. ln June 158 seniors walked up to receive their diploma and bid Griffin goodbye.
