Maybe they did. . . maybe they didn 't. CVYHEDR Cathedral ofthe Immaculate Conception, scene ofman-1' Cathedralf Griffin graduation ceremonies. Sacred Heart X Grwn yearbook debut. One unusual event of the year was a Faculty Appreciation Day which brought many alumni and public figures to honor former teachers. As a result of the dinner held on this occasion, the impetus came to begin working on estab- lishing an alumni association. It did not prove to be permanent but some of the work done served as a basis for the efforts made last year to accomplish the same pur- pose. ln April all were saddened by the death of Brother Schoffman who had suffered a lengthy illness from cancer. This was the first year in which Sacred Heart and Griffin began to work together on the year- book. The yearbook that year fea- tured full color end sheets show- ing students of both schools -dressed in uniforms, caps and gowns, etc., representing all as- pects of school life. lt was by far the most sophisticated yearbook that the school had ever done. ln June 158 seniors walked up to receive their diploma and bid Griffin goodbye.

The new school year saw the inevitable changes that come with every school year. Father Field left after a long tenure at both schools. The faculty welcomed a full time counselor, Mr. Petefish, for many years a prominent figure in the Springfield school system. Also new were Brother Robert Bolser, brother of Bro. Charles Bolser, Bro. Harold Berjohn, Mr. Noreuil, Mr. Walsh and Bro. Houde. Father Weitzel had been the Assistant Principal for several years and concentrated on student activities. A new approach was taken to the annual retreats. Now, small groups of students traveled to Pistokee Bay and the camp owned by the Viatorians. These retreats proved to be very popular with all but the moderators who tended to return with bleary eyes and the need for prolonged peri- ods of rest. The athletic teams had a disap- pointing year until the baseball season rolled around. This team captured both the Regional and District Championships. 1969 team captured Regional and District titles. Chas. Petefish Bro. R. Bolser Bro. H. Berjohn 0. Noreuil E. Walsh Bro. D. Houde

Bro. Bolser worked studenl to :he bone. The 1969-70 school year brought several new teachers to the faculty. Brother Thomas Kass who would have a second term at Griffin as Father Kass, Mr. Cor- bett, Mr. Hattendorf, Mr. Kohl- rus, the new band director, Mr. Liencke, Bro. McBride, Mr. Nonneman, Bro. Rice, Bro. Wen- dell, and Mr. Tom Lavin who is still a member of the faculty were all new to the school. The football team had a much better year and once again took City and Conference titles. The basketball team had a 3-19 season but the baseball team was headed for another championship as the school year closed. Cyclones ran away with City and Conference Titles. Bro. T. Kass E. Corbett Griffin had been operating with deficits for some years and the sal- aries of both the lay and religious teachers were low. The pastors of the Springfield parishes, realizing the importance of Griffin High School to the Catholic commu- nity, met and made several deci- sions that would help the school. They agreed to raise money to take care of the 1970-71 deficit and suggested the formation of a school board. An Advisory Board was set up, the forerunner of the Governing Board that directs the affairs of the school today. The school year had opened with 716 students. One hundred seventy E graduated- W.
