The new school year saw the inevitable changes that come with every school year. Father Field left after a long tenure at both schools. The faculty welcomed a full time counselor, Mr. Petefish, for many years a prominent figure in the Springfield school system. Also new were Brother Robert Bolser, brother of Bro. Charles Bolser, Bro. Harold Berjohn, Mr. Noreuil, Mr. Walsh and Bro. Houde. Father Weitzel had been the Assistant Principal for several years and concentrated on student activities. A new approach was taken to the annual retreats. Now, small groups of students traveled to Pistokee Bay and the camp owned by the Viatorians. These retreats proved to be very popular with all but the moderators who tended to return with bleary eyes and the need for prolonged peri- ods of rest. The athletic teams had a disap- pointing year until the baseball season rolled around. Except for the football team which tied for City and Confer- ence titles, the athletic teams did not fair especially well this year. More successful was the new an- nual trip by the seniors who toured Washington, D.C., and New York City. The Sacred Heart-Griffin Students collabo- rated in a presentation of Show- boat which was very well re- ceived by the audiences that came to see it. The sodality, long present at both Cathedral and Griffin was now under the direction of Father Kicmal who had come to Griffin in 1962. This organization was heavily involved in service proj- ects. Its members participated in the Big Brother Program, Project Reach and did volunteer work at St. John's Hospital and with the handicapped at the Gannar Home. Father Lutz returned to conduct the annual retreat with Father Mangan, one of the Di- ocesan clergy. The class of 1968 numbered 176. Elbow deep in tomato sauce. Action under the proscenium arch. Homecoming game saw Gryfn bow to Assumption 13-7. Part ofthe Sodality parzicipants.

One unusual event of the year was a Faculty Appreciation Day which brought many alumni and public figures to honor former teachers. As a result of the dinner held on this occasion, the impetus came to begin working on estab- lishing an alumni association. It did not prove to be permanent but some of the work done served as a basis for the efforts made last year to accomplish the same pur- pose. ln April all were saddened by the death of Brother Schoffman who had suffered a lengthy illness from cancer. This was the first year in which Sacred Heart and Griffin began to work together on the year- book. The yearbook that year fea- tured full color end sheets show- ing students of both schools -dressed in uniforms, caps and gowns, etc., representing all as- pects of school life. lt was by far the most sophisticated yearbook that the school had ever done. ln June 158 seniors walked up to receive their diploma and bid Griffin goodbye.
