Study of Latin, Spanish Preserves Culture The first year Spanish class prepares for a production of Cinicienta, a puppet show. With the countries of the world coming closer together each year, at least according to travel-time, social studies and foreign language have assumed new dimensions in the classroom. In addition to the skills of grammar and translation, language students are made aware of the cultural heritage of various peoples in other lands. The history department stresses an understanding and awareness of world problems and encourages participation in civic events which will give girls a more lively interest in government. Among the important events of the year is the mock U.N. meeting at State College each spring. A truly unusual experience for Cathedralites, but one which they will always remember, was going to see President Eisenhower when he arrived in San Diego, The picture on the end sheets of this book shows the students as they waited for the President. lement English Program In the English program, the Cathedralite learns Kathy Zaworski holds the first-place di- visional trophy which she won in the Toastmasters' High School Speech Contest. how the heritage of western man has been pre- served in literature. In addition to enjoying poems, plays, novels, and essays of the world's great artists, the student is led to interpret and to respond to what she has read by participation in discussions, dramatic presentations, and original compositions. This year, particular emphasis was given to crea- tive writing through the Honors Literary Work- shops.
