T l AP' ,t ,l XS' g' reat power of the symbol from our Blessed Lord, for He, Himself, I JM ,cgw ' tt My it W 'Wuut Mitt eee it T The Senior Class of 1955 has bound the pages ol its yearbook together with the theme of symbols. Symbols have been defined as signs with something added. This little something has been known to stir up people to piety, heroism, joy, and terror. The use of Christian symbols first began in the Roman Empire, since the early Christians could not, even in the catacombs, safely express themselves except in symbolic form. They had learned the elied heavily on symbols by which to teach His flock. He con- ti J l wg Nl Q stantly referred to the great symbolic institutions, ceremonies, per- ? S Q sons, and events of the Old Law, and incorporated symbolic sub- X Q S' stances and acts - water, bread, wine, anointing, pouring, eating, l' drinking - into the very imparting of divine grace. ' as Y F? Christians, however, do not have a priority over symbols. A l Countries too, use them. Our country's best known symbols are 9 the flag and our National Anthem - symbols of our great land. Q WK' And so our theme is symbols, through which so much can be 6 said and through which so much beauty and meaning can be ex- pressed. May those we have chosen speak most eloquently for us ' of those great truths, great gifts of God, great models set before us that have formed the foundation for our lives.
