the Immaculate Conception on june 10, 1930. He re- turned to Cathedral in 1932. Besides teaching English, Father Mulrooney was also Prefect of Studies. From 1952 until the time of his consecration in April of 1959, Bishop Mulrooney served as Rector. He was also President of the four-year Liberal Arts College and a former member of the general executive board of the National Catholic Educational Association. Bishop Mulrooney is now pastor of Saint Jerome's Parish in Brooklyn. Bishop Denning graduated from Cathedral in 1926 and was ordained in 1932 from Saint Mary's. He re- turned to Cathedral in 1933. During his twenty years, he taught English, mathematics, geology, chemistry and physics. ln addition, he served as Prefect of Discipline. In 1953, he was appointed to Queen of Angels Parish in Sunnyside, Queens. After his consecration, Bishop Den- ning became pastor of Our Lady Queen of Martyrs Parish in Forest Hills. The sixties ushered in for Cathedral a time of ex- pansion unparalleled since the earliest years of her his- tory. In September of 1960, Father Robert E. Welsh suc- ceeded Bishop Mulrooney. The next year, on October 31st, Bishop McEntegart announced plans for a Queens Division to Cathedral to be built in Elmhurst. In the course of the building operations, still another note of recognition came to the school, when Father Welsh was named Papal Chamberlain. In May of 1962, the Holy See announced that Brooklyn-born Right Reverend Monsignor William F. Kupfer, M.M., had been named Bishop of the newly erected Diocese of Taichung, in central Formosa. Father Kupfer had devoted twenty-nine years of his life to mis- sion work in the Qrient and was Prefect Apostolic of the Taichung Prefecture. After fifteen years in China, he went to Formosa in january, 1951, because of Chinese Communist hostility. On Monday November 26, 1956, Archbishop Mol- loy passed away after thirty five years as the third Bishop of Brooklyn. His ties to Cathedral began back in Septem- ber of 1914 when Bishop McDonnell appointed him Spiritual Director of the College. After his election as Bishop, he became President of the Board of Trustees of the College. Among his most outstanding achievements was the building of the Major Seminary at Huntington. He evidenced his continued personal interest and benevo- lence toward Cathedral by his unfailing presence at every commencement exercise. His support and interest were characteristic of his feelings for the minor seminary which laid the foundations for the future priesthood in his diocese. Again the theme of expansion became dominant. This time it was set by the newly-installed Ordinary, The Most Reverend Bryan j. McEntegart, who was appointed by His Holiness, Pius XII, on April 18, 1957. In September of 1957 the St. joseph's Annex to Cathedral was opened to accommodate the increased enrollment. And in March of 1958, to stimulate a still greater number of vocations, ,UF ...I ,QI .vjgfmmw . .iq u f- i ' if it ga in Bishop Bryan J. McEntegart Archbishop Thomas E. Molloy the Bishop granted twenty scholarships 'to the most quali- fied students applying for the minor seminary. Since then the Bishop's scholarships have been awarded each year. Certainly a perfect closing to the decade came about on April 22, 1959, when Pope john's great interest in the valuable labors of Cathedral was reflected in the appoint- ments of the Rector of Cathedral College, the Very Rev- erend Charles R. Mulrooney and the Reverend joseph P. Denning, for twenty years professor of science at Cathe- dral, as Auxiliary Bishops of the Diocese of-Brooklyn. The elevation of these two members of the faculty to the fullness of the priesthood was a most fitting recog- nition of their own dedicated lives, devoted to the educa- tion of future priests, as well as an acknowledgment of the indispensable service rendered by the preparatory seminary in leading young men to the altar of God. Most Reverend Charles R. Mulrooney studied from 1924 to 1926 at Saint Mary's Seminary, Baltimore, and from 1926 to 1930 in the Sulpician Seminary at Catholic University and was ordained in the National Shrine of

In june, 1962, Pope john XXIII appointed Right Reverend Monsignor Vincent J. Baldwin '26 to serve as the first Auxiliary Bishop of the Rockville Center Diocese. He had been Chancellor and Vicar General of the Diocese since it was established in 1957. The Bishop studied at Cathedral, Huntington Seminary and Capranica College, Rome, where he was ordained July 26, 1931. He was named a member of the Diocesan Marriage Tribunal and then, years later, became its secretary. In 1948, he was elevated to the rank of'Papal Chamberlain and be- came Vice-Chancellor of the Brooklyn Diocese in 1949 and a judge in the Diocesan Court in 1954. He is now pastor of Saint joseph's Parish in Garden City. On September 9, 1963, the new division opened with a Solemn Mass attended by the total student body of 570. This joining together at St. james Pro-Cathedral was more than just a symbol of unity. It represented a reality. Though there would now be two buildings, one in each borough, the two would be inseparably bound together, one in the priesthood of Christ. In her Fiftieth year, Cathedral still possesses all the vitality and spiritual energy of her first years. This is certainly due in great measure to the pastoral zeal of Bishop McEntegart, whose generosity of time and inter- est is evidenced in the Scholarship Fund he has set up for Cathedral, his building of a Queens Division and his personal attendance at the yearly play, the Christmas Entertainment and Commencement Exercise. Wars, struggles, tensions, new awakenings-our world today still has need of Christ, His truth, His love, His sacrifice. To Cathedral has been entrusted a most important role in perpetuating that Sacrifice, dispensing that love and preserving that truth. It is Cathedral's essen- tial purpose, her reason for existence, to bring forth in each new generation other Christs, formed by prayer, disciplined by study, receptive to grace and devoted to Mary.
