Varsity Baseball Whenthe Spring of the year rolls around Cathedral .moves her sports programs out of doors. Spring means 'baseball to millions of people in the United States, and Cathedral shares in this enthusiasm for the national pastime. Since the beginning of the school's history in 1914 more and more students have become interested actively in this sport. And their enthusiasm has been echoed and encouraged by the various directorsover the years, starting with Mon-i signor Mcl-lugh and today under the direction of Mr. Crane and Fr. Basler. The lviinims, as Cathedral's first baseball team was called, initiated the tradition of good sportsmanship which after fifty years still characterizes the spirit of the Crusaders, as the team is now called. Fr. O'Connell, presently the Dean of Studies for the high school department, Brooklyn Division, was one-of Cathedral's better infielders. The principles of fair play which he and other members of the faculty learned during their seasons on the team have been evidenced by their sense of manliness in dealing with Cathedralites today., ln ad- dition to sportsmanship and fair play, baseball helps to foster a spirit of team-work and cooperation in the participant. Finally, the unusual variety of bodily skill and coordination ,developed by a sport such, as this contributes most effectively, tothe complete preparedness of a young man for a state in life which will surely demand physical stamina as well as intellectual and moral strength.
