Since the founding of the school in 1914, there vias always been a team representing Cathedral in basketball com- petition. In this long history oft play, our teams and coaches have contributed greatly to the ad- vancement of thelsport. It is Cathedrals privilege to have been among the original members of the Catholic High School Athletic Associations bas- ketball league. We also had they privilege of winning the league's championship in 1926. To Cathedral also belongs the distinction of empha- sizing the zone defense in basketball strategy. At present, Father Basler, Moderator of Athletics in our Queen's Division, is the head of the Catholic High School Athletic Association's 'basketball league. This important post is a tribute to Father Basler and all the dedicated men who have directed Cathedral's sports activities in the past. Of course, our teams have not always brought home a successful record, but they have always gained bytheir past seasons. Good sports- manship is not a tangible thing which can be determined by a team's wins and losses. Whether or not we ,played the game well is the important thing. And' it is this one 'factor whichlmakes our teams outstanding. Our ballplayers have been noted for their ability to play a clean but hard game. Even after a crushing defeat they bounce back with renewed vigor. If this were the only accomplishment for which we may be distin- guished, certainly it would be enough. ' ln this past year, 1963-1964, the most suc- cessful of all Cathedral's teams has been her college club. It has compiled a very praiseworthy record of eleven wins and only one loss, defeat- ing such schools as: Pratt Institute, Community College of New York, Seton Hall, and many others. The rest of the school teams have also enjoyed a measure of success. Along with their coaches every ballplayer deserves Commendation for a well-played season.
