,Nikolai Gogel it 1. -, 1, 22,24 523: 4. The Father Tabb Society It seems that the underclassmen at Cathedral have always had an interest in literary pursuits. Therefore, the present day Father Tabb Literary Society has had many ancestors both remote and proximate. Back in November of 1945, the St. Thomas Aquinas Society was formed as a junior', St. Thomas More Society. By 1948, this group had gradually slipped into oblivion. The society as we have it, was formed in April, 1950 by Father Feldhaus. With the simple title of junior Literary Society, it solicited its membership from only first and second years. The Spire of that month reported the purpose of its formation was to lay the foundation for good literary habits and prepare the student for membership in the St. Thomas More Society later. By May of 1950, it had changed its name to the Father Tabb Society in honor of the 19th Century priest-poet. Gradilone presided over the formation of the present Cathedral College Orchestra. Of these beginnings, the Spire reported on june 10th of that year: At present the group consists of four violinists from the good music soon. As the orchestra grew, this promise was realized. At present, the orchestra, now an integral part of the Music Department is still providing many moments of memorable music, under the capable direction of Father N' W if pim m . ... The Chess Club Wednesday afternoon means Chess Club to its members, both from the College as well as the High School, since 1955 when it was founded by Mr. Roger Martin in cooperation with Father Rogers. Perhaps more than any other extracur- ricular society, the Chess Club trains the mind and reflexes in strategy, planning ahead and the challenge of responsibility.
