In 1939, he was suc- ceeded by our present librarian, Mr. Francis X. McDermott who is celebrating his twenty-fifth anniversary at Cathedral this year. While in 1944, there were about 7,500 vol- umes on the shelves, today we total over 14,000 not counting the additional 3,000 at the Queens Division, under the careful guidance of Miss Vera Coutard. The Legion of Mary Organizing the Legion in 1942, Father john J. Fee explained that its object is the sanctification of its members by prayer and active cooperation, under ecclesiastical guid- ance, in Mary's and the Church's work of crushing the head of the serpent and ad- vancing the reign of Christ. Membership in Cathedral's Praesidium is restricted to the members of the College. Those unable to take an active part in the Legion become auxiliary members, support- ing with their prayers, its important work of comforting the sick and instructing the young.
