The Spire Up until 1945, the only publication in Cathedral was the Gargoyle which offered specialized articles of a literary nature. There was an obvious need for a newspaper. On March 23, 1945, Cathedral's first newspaper, the Undex Cwhich in Latin means the informer D was mimeographed by a staff consisting of Fifth and Sixth Years with Father john J. Wiest as moderator. However, the privilege of having a story in the ?ndex did not appeal to many and so on june 15, 1945, the name was changed to the Spire. ln May of 1957, it was announced that the paper would be given to the responsibility of the high-school department seniors. Fourth and Fifth Years worked together for the remainder of the year to effect a swift and orderly transition until September of 1958 when the Spire appeared as it now is.

The Father Ryan Players The Fifth Year Dramatic Association was formed in 1929 by its di- rector, Father john E. Ryan. In 1930, its name was changed to the Saint Francis Players. It finally received its present name in 1939 after the death of its founder. The Players produced a play on the stage of the Academy of Music for the first time in 1935 with the performance of The First Legion. Through the years, the students under the capable guidance of their faculty directors have provided many enjoyable evenings of dramatic enter- tainment, thus carrying on a long and valuable tradition in Cathedral's extra- curricular life.
