On September 10, 1971, fall convocation was held on the newly constructed patio. The students had the pleasure of feasting upon the music of Harry Deal and the Galaxies and later on a hamburger cookout. The music was performed as the first formal use of the patio and the cookout was held at the pavilion in the woods. The Convocation Day activities were sponsored by the supreme efforts of the Student Activity Committee along with the Student Government and faculty members. FEATURES 19 REGISTRATION DAY Boom! Boom! Blast! That’s very descriptive of registration and orientation of freshman beginning fall quarter this year. The instruction of Freshman Registration procedures and school rules were, at first, quite confusing for entering Freshmen. This year C. V. T.l. has a total of 1078 students enrolled in fall quarter. This has been one of the highest enrollments. After filling out schedules, waiting in line for books, and being lost for the first two days, Freshmen were off to a very exciting year. 20 FEATURES Registration is to some students searching a week for a 9:00 — 10:30 class on Tuesday and Thursday to complete their schedule when one wasn't offered to begin with, writing out all information on regis- tration cards with instructions Please Print, and to complete the student's exciting day, he finds he has misplaced his trial schedule and is completely lost. Students are required to visit their assigned ad- visors to complete a trial schedule before registration. On registration day, the student completes the sched- ule and other forms. He is ready to be sent to check- ing stations, making sure the proper information is filled out correctly and completely. Next, he goes to designated stations to pay tuition and buys necessary materials for each class. FEATURES 21 EVENING CLASSES Catawba Valley Technical Institute's Evening classes offer a diversity of courses ranging from elementary instruction in reading and writing to courses in vocational-technical and business skill development, as well as courses for cultural and personal enrichment. While many of these are held on the CVTI campus, others are conducted or may be organized in surrounding communities or within a particular business or industry throughout the area served by CVTI. Currently classes are regularly scheduled in Taylorsville, Statesville, and Mooresville. 22 FEATURES At CVTI, the newer philosophy of learning has been implemented. AH resources to enhance learning are coordinated from one point. A strong nucleus is formed by drawing together the library collection, the audio-visual media, and the printing areas. In today's world of fast changing technology, this ap- proach is a more logical one than separating each support area of learning as has been done in the past. It is not what one learns, but how one learns it that counts in society today. Bringing all materials to- gether we feel is the best approach to enable instruc- tors, students, and members of the community to keep abreast of what is happening. FEATURES 23 DIRECTED STUDIES LAB The CVTI Learning Lab offers a variety of courses through the use of programmed materials. By nature of lab equipment and staff, students are enabled to work at their own pace and as personal daily schedules permit. Students may improve their literacy aptitude, correct weak subjects, or get a head start in their own CVTI pro- gram. 24 FEATURES Mr. George Brown, who retired from CVTI after 11 years and 5 months of faithful service, receives a certificate and a staff gift from President Robert E. Paap at an appreciation dinner on October 29, 1971. The Furniture Technology Building was a feature from its concep- tion. Containing classes in furniture production, sewing, and uphol- stering, this building is one of the finest in North Carolina. FEATURES 25 THE CVTI BOOKSTORE The bookstore at CVTI has come a long way. It started out very small at a different location where you had to ask a clerk at a window to get what you needed. It is now in what used to be the student center. Before the present attendant, Cathy Leitch was Katherine Yount who had served three years. Mr. Thomas Jame- son, Business Manager of CVTI, is in charge of the bookstore. In the bookstore, you will find all the required books for both day and night-time students. There are extras that are of interest to students such as paperback books, sweaters, posters, albums, tapes, and equipment students may need to buy. Purchasing a decorative poster from the attendant (top) is only one of the minor happenings in the bookstore. Kathy Jensen deft) discovers new techniques in shorthand and Norma Seagle (below) locates a source for her technical research paper. 26 FEATURES A good time was enjoyed by all who attended the Christ- mas Dance as shown by Mike Miller and date, (left) Dale Lutz and date, and Mr. James Yoder and wife. CVTI Christmas Dance Through the supreme efforts of the Student Government Association, CVTI held a very successful 1971 Christmas Dance, December 19, at the Hickory Na- tional Guard Armory. Music was pro- vided by THE PARTLY CLOUDY, a band from Chapel Hill, North Carolina. The dance was open to all full-time stu- dents of CVTI and one guest. At inter- mission, as in years past, Mr. and Miss Merry Christmas were crowned. FEATURES 27 Jfflr. Sc jHfliss JHerry (Eljrtstmas 1971 Congratulations are in order for two CVTI students elected to reign over the 1971 Christmas Dance. These were Miss Denise Campbell and Mr. Tommy McBride. Mr. Merry Christmas; and Ronnie Johnson, 1st runner-up, look on. 28 FEATURES o p E N H O U S E 6,000 A TTEND CVTI OPEN HOUSE An estimated 6,000 guests from six coun- ties served by Catawba Tech visited the ex- tensive facilities and all buildings on the campus east of Hickory. Visitors from Ca- tawba, Alexander, Burke, Caldwell, Iredell, and Lincoln counties took the opportunity Sunday, October 31, 1971, to inspect the many changes since CVTI's last Open House in 1968. Visitors saw displays and exhibits created by the students and faculty members, each of which were typical of the activity in the particular areas. Sophisticated teaching materials and demonstrations were also in operation, and adult education and extension courses also had their day. Student Govern- ment members were stationed at all entrances and distributed facility maps to visitors for their convenience in finding classrooms or lab- oratories of special interest to them. Margaret Teague (below) accepts her award from Mrs. Triplett. w CVTI RECOGNIZES OUTSTANDING STUDENTS Catawba Tech acknowledged several students during graduation exercises last year. These included Eddie Yancey, Janice Drum Joel Herman, and Margaret Teague. Eddie Yancey and Janice Drum received recognition for having the highest academic averages for the technological and vocational fields, respectively. The most outstanding male stu- dent award went to Joel Herman. Mr. Herman was an active member of the Student Government and also on the Student Appeals Com mittee. Margaret Teague was chosen outstanding female student. Miss Teague was president of ESA, a member of the yearbook staff, and is presently working as evening sec- retary at CVTI. These students were chosen secretly by the faculty based on their grades and partici- pation in school activities. 32 FEATURES NEW BUSINESS WING OPENED FOR FALL QUARTER On September 7, 1971, the new west business wing of Catawba Tech opened its doors for full-time oper- ations. The contents included some forty-five thousand dollars worth of new equipment. It contains ten rooms including two typing, one office machines, three accounting, three data processing and one general room. The types of equipment it houses are of- fice machinery, data processing equipment and a steno-trainer. As the enrollment at CVTI continues to climb, this new wing has been a tre- mendous help to overpopulated area. FEATURES 33 A committee composed of Student Government members worked hard during the Spring quarter designing the new patio. Twenty-five to thirty-one hours of work was accomplished by the com- mittee. The work involved visiting different furniture stores before making a definite decision The wrought iron furniture was purchased from the Timmerman Manufacturing Company in Conover, the plastic furniture was purchased from Cablin in Michigan. The committee co-ordinated everything with Instructor Jim Daniels to make sure the most appropriate designs were selected. 34 FEATURES Free at last! Free at last! Good Gosh Almighty! Free at last! GRADUATION - TECHNICAL TRAINING FOR A BETTER AND BRIGHTER FUTURE Graduation — A time of forgiving, forgetting, putting past grievances behind, remembering the good times and the bad, with this in mind, CVTI is no exception. Each member of the 1971 graduating class of Catawba Tech left a small part of himself, as he, in turn, took a small part of the school with him. As graduation approaches, thoughts of yesterday reoccur through the back- roads of many students minds, as does the anxious anticipation of what to- morrow holds. 4s a new leaf is over- turned, graduating students now glimpse yesterday and journey into tomorrow with thoughts of happiness, success, and apprehension as members of a brave, new world. This year's cheering squad looks back on the 71-72 basketball season with some unique memories of a hectic season. Events earmarking the past season include the first try-outs before the student body, selection of new uniforms and an entire new range of personality differences molded into one group to spur the Buccaneers on to vic- tory. The traditional ''Buccaneer'' Kesley Caldwell escorted the girls to the tilts be- tween Catawba Tech and numerous oppo- nents. Each dub was given the opportunity to sponsor a candi- date for the title of beauty queen. A small entrance fee for each candidate was paid for by the dub. All proceeds were given to the Glenn Davis fund. The pageant was scheduled after the final year- book deadline. These candidates and their escorts agreed to prepare themselves a few weeks early to give our photographers a sneak preview of the fun that was ahead. ? A ? The staff and hope that through our efforts we have been able to accomplish our goals. Much time, effort, and imagination went into putting this book together.
