The new students ore acquainted with the CVTI environment, courses, policies, phi- losophy, staff, and other students. Assem- bJies, lectures, open discussions, and stu- dent handbooks help prepare the new ar- rivals for beginning studies at Catawba Tech. Through this method of welcoming and introducing the first year students to CVTI and its ways, students have a friendlier attitude toward their new school. 14 A Bustle During Registration Registration days at Catawba Valley Technical Institute are very hectic. Students enrolling in cred- it courses are expected to register for course work on the day and at the time specified for each person each school quarter. Non-credit class registrations are usu- ally held at the first class meeting. A student's schedule for the new quarter must be approved by his faculty advisor and arranged through the announced classes by the Student Personnel Of- fice. It is the student's and the registration assis- tants job to see that each person is placed in the desired class at the right time in the right section. When a student is scheduled to enroll on the last registration day during the last hour, he usually does- n’t have much luck in getting any of the desired class times; but there is always another registration when his name may be on top of the list. is Evening Classes Are Catawba Valley Technical Institute expands its community improvement by providing evening classes. The ad- ministration and faculty of Catawba Valley Tech invite all interested citizens to use and enjoy the educa- tional facilities of their school. People with the desire to receive their high school diploma, men and women wanting to learn more about their field of work, students wishing to earn an Associate of Applied Science degree, or anyone interested in having a wider variety of knowledge are the many reasons why evening classes are offered. Anyone with a desire to increase his knowledge of any available subject from keypunching to cake decora- ting may go to CVTI because that is where it is! Data Processing Furniture Drafting Catawba Valley Tech does not stop at providing day and evening classes, adult education classes, or spe- cial demanded classes, but also gives students the opportunity to earn an A.A.Sc. degree. Data Processing and Furniture Production Programs are currently available and studies are under way to add other degree or diploma programs. Directed Studies Lab Whatever happened to the EASY problems? Through the Directed Studies Laboratory, a student may find help to prepare for high school equivalency examinations, make up admissions deficiencies for technical institutes and colleges, reduce specific educa- tional weaknesses, upgrade themselves for job promotion, reinforce other courses of study, or simply for personal satisfaction. There are more than forty subjects among which any student can adjust study time to meet his own conve- niences and schedules. One sets his own study sessions and attends as many days and hours per week us he can. Enrollees may begin courses at any time during the quarter and may undertake as many subjects as desired. The Directed Studies Laboratory Coordinator can help the student: locate the level of instruction at which the student can learn by himself, formulate the sequence of courses to be taken, and assure himself that he is making satisfactory progress. What is more, there are no admissions requirements or fees for study in the Lab. 18 Learning Resource Center Striving to meet the needs of every student, the Learning lie- source Center offers books for entertainment and reference. There are periodicals of past, present, and future information available for each student. The pleasant attitude of the librarians muke the use of the Center an enjoyment instead of a chore. To the instructors, the Center serves as a means of research and adding greater depth to classroom presentation. I know I saw it somewhere. Ver-y interesting! Our Doors Open Wide Construction of the Furniture Laboratory began in June 1970. The laboratory encompasses about 20,000 sq. ft. of floor space. The total cost was approximately S700.000 which includes all ma- chinery. It is a very complete facility in that the student can study all phases of manufacturing from the yard and kiln to the finished product. The lab- oratory also houses a complete upholstering and cutting and sewing facility. It is the purpose of the administration and furniture staff to make this furniture (raining laboratory the finest of its type in the United States. 20 To Further Education Our Provider, The Bookstore Anyone in there? What kind of card can I send Mother? Whenever students need any required hooks, supplies, or necessary tools, they go to Catawba Tech's we i-slocked bookstore. This walk-in. self-service bookstore is also supplied with other items of students' interest. Purchases may even be made by the general public. 22 Picnicking Time: Chiggers Anyone? The students and faculty of C.V.T.I. enjoyed time away from the classrooms due to a picnic. Everyone followed a nar- row trail down to an outside barbecue pit where grilled hamburgers, potato chips, and soft drinks were waiting. But these don't have ruffles! Oh, Boy! Lunch time! A Display of Talent From the Student Body Jo Minion, Winner The CVTI Talent Show is one of the highlights during the year. A variety of students volunteered to display their different talents be- fore the entire student body. fo Minton, winner of the 1970 Talent Show given to the student body of CVTI. sang the beautiful song, What Do You Get When You Fall in Love? She not only won the votes of the judges but got a hearty applause from the students. First runner-up, Linda Rose, did an original song by sing- ing and playing the guitar. Not only did her entertainment appeal to the students' ears, but so did the lyrics of her song. Fletcher Eckard, sec- ond runner-up, displayed his talent by giving the students a few laughs with his Flip Wilson comedy skit. Linda Rose, Second place Fletcher Eckard, Third place Parade Day Once Again One of the greatest enjoyments of children and adults is to be able to uttend a parade. Catawba Val- ley Technical Institute takes great pride in present- ing a float for the public. Members of the Student Government displayed floats that took long hours of hard work in order to gel the job done just right. People may derive pleasure from seeing a parade, a thrill from joining in one. but they will receive even a better joy by witnessing a float from CVTI. In the picture below, you will find some of the con- testants for the Miss CVTI contest of 1970. They are: Lynn Long. Nina Ford. Juanita Vounl. Cindy Walker. Susan Merrill, and Evelyn Bishop. Whal! No apples for Ihe teacher? Now this is what I call a REAL patriotic float! Do all the girls at CVTI look this cute? 25 Pins and Awards Presented We a! Catawba Valley Technical Insti- tute take pride in presenting pins and awards as acknowledgement of our out- standing students and staff. Also, it is our pleasure to be able to accept the rec- ognition of a trophy for extraordinary talent in presenting our school lo the public. We are glad to be able lo have you join us on these happy occasions by showing you some of them on this page. One of the functions that derive great enjoyment for Catawba Tech is to extend recognition for some special cause. We had this opportunity whenever some of our staff qualified to receive a five-or ten-year pin. They are as follows in the top picture: left to right, Mr. Robert Paap. President, presenting a pin to Mr. George Brown, receiver of a ten-year pin. The five-year pins were received by Mr. B. C. She brings oul her budding gown of green and lets it spread over the surface of the world. Registration, a new constitution, and new of- ficers and senators were the first events of the or- ganization. Long hours of planning and tedious labor of stuffing napkins into chicken wire and inflating balloons at the Hickory National Guard Armory made up the preparations for the Christmas Dance. Similar arrangements were made for the Spring Dance with the election of a new “Miss CVTI. Other activities of the Government included a Christmas tree in the student center and the election of a Rotary Student of the Month recognized by the Hickory Rotary Club for each month. With more than a majority vote, members of the 70-71 Catvatechi Staff agreed to prepare lay-outs for a larger yearbook. Two workshops during the school year helped in meeting deadlines in addition to the editor and assistant editor attending a work- shop at Appalachian State University during the sum- mer. Preparing ivrite-ups and captions, sketching lay- out sheets, and cropping pictures through long and fatiguing hours resulted in the compilation of the 1970-71 Catvatechi Yearbook. An additional respon- sibility of the staff was the election of a Mr. and Miss Merry Christmas” at the Christmas Dance. 41 Students line up to purchase their individual pictures.
