CLARENCE T. FOX, JR. 2 It is with warm gratitude that we offer this token of appreciation to a person who has contri- buted outstanding services to the students of CVTl for the past four years. He has taught social science and Spanish, counseled students and served on the library committee. He is a graduate of Lenoir Rhyne College and received his masters degree from Appalachian State University. In honor of a man who is extremely dedicated to his work and who puts the students of CVTI before himself, we, on behalf of the whole student body, wish to express our gratitude and deep admiration for the many things he has done for us. To an instructor, a friend, an advisor, a father, we the CATVATECHI staff dedicate this 1970 yearbook to Mr. Clarence T. Fox, Junior. Mr. Fox enjoys teaching students, as well as grading test papers. Governor Bob Scott visited CVTI a few years ago with Dr. Harry Arndt, President of the Board of Trustees of CVTI, and President Bob Paap. 4 Hopes, Tomorrow's Realities We came not knowing as Freshmen what to expect; we found knowledge, friendship, and courage. Classrooms filled with eager young men and women, instructors brimming with information, a library com- plete with technical data all these things made CVTI a haven for creative learning. Don Campbell hails from Forest City, North Carolina, and is a second year Ornamental Horticulture student. Don takes great pride in representing CVT1 on any and all occasions. Agricultural Technology Division 19 Business Technology 20 Traffic Transportation Division Secretarial General Office Secretarial General Office 21 Engineering Technology Division 22 Mechanical Drafting and Design Engineering Technology 23 Furniture Production 24 Upholstering Upholstery Cutting Sewing 25 Vocational Automotive Mechanics Electrical Installation 26 Division Machine Shop 27 Vocational Practical Nursing Program 28 Division 29 Adult Education Soars NEW ADULT SEWING CENTER at Kiwanis Park in Hickory is the only one of its kind in the Southeastern part of the United States. Experts in Clothing Con- struction have declared that CVT1 is making a unique contribution to the citizens of the Catawba Valley area by offering 20 classes per quarter in Sewing. These classes are offered during the morning, afternoon and evening hours, Monday through Friday. THE PROFESSIONAL MODELING CLASS demon- strated some of the classroom techniques in a big Fall Fashion Show that was open to the general public. One of the highlights of the Fashion Show was the grand finale with five of the models demonstrating the technique of Dance Modeling. This was another first for CVT1. Dr. Larry H. Penley, CVT1 Director of Adult Education, was awarded the earned Doctor of Education Degree with a major in Adult Education in May 16, 1969, commencement exercises at Luther Rice Seminary in Jacksonville, Florida. Dr. Penley also received another advanced degree, the Master of Divinity Degree, in January 23, 1970, commencement exercises at Southern Baptist Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky. During the past year Dr. Penley brought national and international recognition to CVTI - he was named for the third time to appear in Who’s Who in the South and Southwest, and to appear in Who’s Who in American College and University Administration, Personalities of the South, the Dictionary of International Biography of London, England, and the Biographical Library of Continuing Education of Syracuse University. 30 To New Heights Jim Cottrell, CVTI Ski Instructor, is one of 25 instructors used in the large CVTI Snow Skiing Class at Appalachian Ski Mountain in Blowing Rock. Over 210 students enrolled in the class. This class is offered only in the Winter Quarter. Bill Bryan, CVTI Adult Instructor and veteran caller for Western Style Square Dancing, demonstrates the technique as he puts the dancers through some of the more than 200 steps required in Western Style Square Dancing. Approximately 100 students take this class every quarter. CVTI President, Robert E. Paap, observes members of the Cake Decorating Class put the finishing touches on 25 cakes that were used as refreshments for the Professional Modeling Fashion Show. 3t Miss CVTI Crowned Peggy Hodgeson 32 at Spring Dance Queen’s Court 33 Mr. Gaither enjoys dancing. Graduation Catawba Valley Technical Institute conducted its graduation ceremonies for the class of’69 on August 20, 1969, at the P. E. Monroe Auditorium on Lenoir Rhyne College campus. James Beatty, a representative in the North Carolina legislature, was the speaker. 34 Marshals were Donald E. Norris, chief. Henry E. Hudson, Elizabeth L. Jenkins, Pamela Gail Lail, Donnie Ray Poole, Pamela Ann Loftin, Cathy L Scott, and Gregory H. Williams. Veronica Byers received the outstanding girl award from John Poropatic, chairman of faculty awards. Day 1969 Two hundred and nineteen students graduated in the class of 69. As the graduates received their diplomas, they were greeted and congratulated by the President, Mr. Robert E. Paap. There were seventy-seven vocational graduates and one hundred and forty-two two-year technical graduates in the 69 class. 35 Waiting in line! Mrs. Herman and Mrs. Walls take in tuition.
