CVTI’s CHALLENGE CATAWBA VALLEY TECHNICAL INSTITUTE Hickory, North Carolina 1969 Volume VI Theme: Page 2 Activities: Page 17 Features: Page 49 Student Listings: Page 82 Index: Page 134 Editor: Veronica Byers Classroom, And Careers Challenge, to excel in classroom discussion, to meet the goals of our careers and to accept the challenge of today is facing us, the students of CVTI. Yes, this was our year! We laughed, sometimes cried, but we made history. Some were successful, others were not, but we all remember September to August in 1969-one year, a challenge to a better life. 5 Our Student Center is the most popular area of school. Here students eat, study, relax, converse with other students, and wait for the next class to begin. With the entertainment provided by the television set and jukebox, our Student Center is known as a “Swinging Place” for both students and instructors. Most of the time the Student Center is crowded, but these three boys flaked out from too much homework and study. In the Student Center we can easily see how the ratio can be “four to one.” The work day of the administration staff is never completed. 14 t ‘Student to Student’. . . The Catawba Valley Technical Institute Chapter of the Future Secretaries Association was organized in October, 1968. The purpose was to engender interest in the secretarial field and to encourage continuing education through association with those engaged in the secretarial profession. The first Monday night of each month the FSA has planned activities. Among these were panel dis- cussions, filmstrips, guest speakers, and the instal- lation ceremony for officers and club members. Over the last three years our basketball team has improved through practice sessions, and participating in games. This year new uniforms helped to boost the moral of the boys; also there was the added attraction of a cheerleading squad. Next year we hope to compete in a community college league. Hundreds of homemakers learn Clothing Construction at CVTI every year. Eight classes in sewing are offered each quarter. Evening Classes A special class in Lumber Grading was spon- sored by the CVT1 Extension Department and North Carolina State University for the benefit of area furniture factories and lumber yards. CVTI instructor Gordon Yount teaches adults all the fundamentals in playing a good game of bridge. Extension classes on campus include a variety of different classes. During the Fall Quarter instructor Clay Groves taught an evening class in electronics. Guitars, Cakes For Fun Guitar playing for the beginner is very popular with the adults who are learning to play in a group situation. Cake Decoration is fun for adults as well as the opportunity to learn a skill that can be used by the average homemaker. Building An Electronic World 63 Practical Nurse Classroom study of Anatomy. Admiring Yount’s trophy are CVT1 student Eddie Miller of Statesville, and George McLeod, CVT1 instructor. A Catawba Valley Technical Institute instructor has one of the most unusual hobbies of any of the staff members at the local institute. Recently Paul Yount was voted as the mechanic of the year at the Hickory Speedway by the sports- man drivers who have participated in the various races. Yount, mechanic and co-owner of the Tommy Houston Ford, won the coveted award the hard way. One consideration in Yount’s selection was the fact that the same engine has been used all year in Houston’s 1956 Ford. Yount and Houston had par- ticipated in over 40 feature events this season. Paul Yount, right, has been voted mechanic of the year by Sportsman drivers. He’s seen here with Tommy Houston, on the threshold of becoming the next Sportsman champion of North Carolina. The Independent Garage Owners of Catawba County sponsor the mechanic of the year trophy. 71 Student Government's Parade Day education 72 CVTI’s student government built and displayed a float in Lenoir Rhyne’s Homecoming Parade.
