p ecij I had finished reading a book which ended so happily for everyone that 1 began to think about all of my classmates and their futures. I must have fallen asleep, but what I saw convinced me that I had been carried in my sleep to some future world. I seemed to be in a wonderful and spacious hall. There were beautiful gold statues and silver vases set around; the walls were lined with mirrors. In all my life I had never seen such splen- dor. At the farther end of the hall was a raised throne on which a lovely woman sat. She seemed to be in a daze and appeared to be greatly surprised at my presence. Then in a silvery voice that reminded me of running streams, she said, Why dost thou come here; thou art a mortal and no mortal is allowed here.” Impelled by some curious instinct, I told her that I wished to know the future of all my classmates. She led me to one of the mirrors and bade me look. She then disappeared. I gazed steadily at it, but nothing happened. Finally, when I had nearly despaired, I saw a light illuminating the already bright place. Then I saw someone in the distance; the scene came closer, and I recognized Betty Boggs, the first woman President of the United States, talking to none other than Wayne Moore. She had recently appointed him Secretary of Agriculture. The next scene was in California, where I recognized Martha Myers, who had become famous for her book on the new methods of teaching kindergarten. As this scene faded, another one appeared. I saw Billy Setzer with a cigar in his mouth. He had become one of the richest executives in the world. His secretary was none other than Virginia Huffman, one of the highest paid women in the world. This time the scene appeared in Chicago. I saw one of the world’s largest theaters, with crowds of expensively dressed people streaming in. The name of the star was in lights. Ray- nell Matthews !!! I could hardly believe it. This was the opening night of the most talked about ballet of the year. The next scene was on a baseball field, where I recognized Mack Bridges. He was playing baseball on the National League team. I learned that he was voted the most valuable player in this profession. His batting average was one thousand. As I was rejoicing over the good news, the scene changed once more. This time it was in a far distant country, Paris, France. There I saw Jimmy Morrow who had become a world famous clothes designer. This news was not too surprising, for he was noted for his tasteful choice of clothes in high school. As this scene faded away, another appeared. I saw the world’s largest milk plant. I then learned that Royd Bowman was the owner. His numerous dairy farms were completely stocked with nothing but Jersey cows. Experts had found that Jersey milk was the best. It costs less and is the best,” was his slogan which almost put the Pet and Carnation milk plants out of business. In the next scene I found that I was looking into an art museum. I saw some beautiful paint- ings, and immediately began to search for the name of the artist. I was dazzled when I saw the name, Phyllis Kale. Suddenly the scene began to grow dim. I came to myself and found the book in my hand, but the impression remained with me that I had been transported to another world for a glimpse of of the future. Phyllis Kale
