Class Prophecy “Annie, you must be our prophet, ' said my classmates. “Go home and dash off the luckiest prophecy your ever sharp will permit. I went home but not to dash off the required prophecy . Me prophecy? As well ask Hurcules in the hall to . However, if my classmates said I must prophecy, prophecy I must--and would . I climbed the apple tree in the back yard and began to ponder the subject deeply. Indeed, so deeply that before I knew it I was fast asleep. When I awoke it was morning. “Goodness gracious'. ' I exclaimed, ‘'Have I slept here all night? I might have tumbled out. Why, what ever is the matter? Have I only dreamed that I had bobbed hair? My hair, it is down to my knees! And Oh, how stiff they are . I feel as I've imagined a woman of thirty-five must feel. After extraordinary efforts I managed to scramble down out of the tree, ejaculating meanwhile. I'm glad the basketball girls aren't here to see me now'. Dear me there's the bell'. 1 11 have to fly without going in to breakfast'. As I ran toward Old Catawba High there was nothing there but a lawn to the Baptist church. I walked dazedly back out to the drug store and asked where I could find the school house. A clerk told me the bus was just leaving out on the square. As we traveled toward the new consolidated high school on Highway 70, I told the driver he looked very familiar with his very curly hair and dimples. He offered the information that his father had curly hair and I knew in an instant be meant Jerry Sharpe. He said his father was still working in Elliott Knitting Mill. When we arrived at school, I stepped off the bus and was stared at considerably. I stared back at a man with a mustache who was unmistakably Mr. Jones. We climbed the stairs together as he told me Clyde Moore, new county farm agent, was to visit the school that day. “Here comes Mrs. Sain, said Mr. Jones, and undoubtedly Christine Robinson was approaching us. She was due to teach a French class in a few minutes. In the meantime she told me James Lowrance was now depot agent after his father’s retirement. In her hand she held a letter from Martha Frazier telling her of her new job at Mercy Hospital in Asheville as medical secretary to Dr. Clifford Bond, nose, ear and throat specialist. The bell rang then but Christine promised to meet me for lunch. Having nothing else to do I walked across the road to the Super Market. I met T. N. Campbell, manager of the store. I walked back through the store and there stood Pansy Hubbard buying groceries. We chatted a few minutes. She told me she was buying a deep freezer that afternoon from Ray Lowrance who sold electric appliances in a warehouse of his own in Hickory. Pansy had just moved into her new home near Newton. Pansy had to go then as she was going to Hickory to get an order she had placed in Peggy Sigmon's dress shoppe. After talking with several people to pass the time away until lunch I went to the lunch- room to meet Christine. During lunch she told me Hazel Yount had married a lawyer from Maiden and had become his financial secretary. I asked Christine what she did after lunch and she told me she had a study class while Hubert Setzer coached basketball to both boys and girls. 16
