You may not find the events that I am about to relate, in the pages of American Histories, but they are as worthy of mentioning as any of the deeds performed by the heroes whose names appear in famous books. Would you have me prove my words? Then stretch your ears and give heed. In the year 1946 eighteen handsome, smiling boys and girls descended upon Catawba High as Freshmen, without the calm and dignity that has always characterized our actions. We saw before us Mr. Harrington, Mr. Jones and Mrs. Musgrove to be our teachers. We knew then that we would have to settle down to studying. We lingered as Freshmen until the following summer, successfully meeting the requirements of Freshmen. In the year of 1947 we advanced and took possession of the strongholds of the Sophs--greeting teachers, friends and classmates. We found that there were only fourteen to struggle through the Sophomore year. Mr. Tolliver had replaced Mr. Harrington. In spite of our greenness in Biology, History and other courses we obtained strong foothold in them. Now having conquered the lessons of the Sophs we advanced to Juniors. In the year 1948 we were Jolly Juniors indeed at Catawba. Realizing now that we were Juniors, we would have to settle down to work. We found that four classmates had departed and Pansy Hubbard had joined our group making eleven to master the studies of the forthcoming year. On January 21, 1949 we were the happiest students in school. Guess what? Our most beautiful rings we had long hoped for had arrived. Then on May 13, 1949 the great event of the year was coming to an end and we had met the requirements of Juniors ready to march to the last year at Catawba High. The year 1949 was marked by important reconstruction for the humble group who had invaded the Freshman Class three years before now became Seniors. The mighty leaders of the realm and Invincible Class of 1950. We were happy to know that eleven Juniors were still together with an ole classmate who had been detained from studies for a year. Together we will struggle to the end of our journey at Catawba high. We Seniors noted for our ability and diligence have come to the fourth round of knowledge at Catawba with our motto “He who findeth knowledge findeth life” impressed upon our shields. The class of 1950 goes forth to invade and conquer new territories. 12 Christine Robinson, Historian Class Will We, the graduating class of 1950, realizing that the end of our sojourn at Catawba High is drawing nigh, do declare this to be our last will and testament. Article 1: To the school building we leave as fine a student body as can be expected, after our departure. Article 2: To the faculty we leave our appreciation for their patience and guidance. Article 3; To the Juniors we bequeath our key to education. May it unlock many doors of the unknown future for them. Article 4: To the Sophomores we leave our monopoly of the telephone. Article 5: To the Freshmen we leave our sympathy and respect for what they are beginning to undertake. Article 6: To our parents we leave our love and appreciation for making our graduation possible. Article 7: In order that our individual talents may not be forgotten, we make the following bequests: Item 1: I, T. N. Campbell Jr., bequeath to Martha Myers my friendly disposition. Item 2: I, Martha Frazier, bequeath to Virginia Huffman my musical talent. Ttem 3: I, Pansy Hubbard, bequeath to anyone who needs it, my ability to bluff. Item 4; 1, Annie Jones, bequeath to Jimmy Morrow, my winning ways with the opposite sex. Item 5: I, James Lowrance, bequeath to Raynell Matthews my privilege of being late for class. Item 6: I, Ray Lowrance, bequeath to Betty Neill Boggs, the privilege of driving my ••Buick” around town. Item 7; I, Clyde Moore,- bequeath to Brother Wayne, my many talents. Item 8: I, Christine Robinson, bequeath to Mack Bridges my love of studying. Item 9: I, Hubert Setzer, bequeath to Phyllis Kale my pretty red hair and blue eyes. Item 10: I, Jerry Sharpe, bequeath to Royd Bowman, my curly hair and blue eyes. Item 11: I, Peggy Sigmon, bequeath to Dot Robinson my ability in athletics. I went home but not to dash off the required prophecy . Me prophecy? As well ask Hurcules in the hall to . However, if my classmates said I must prophecy, prophecy I must--and would . I climbed the apple tree in the back yard and began to ponder the subject deeply. Indeed, so deeply that before I knew it I was fast asleep. When I awoke it was morning. “Goodness gracious'. ' I exclaimed, ‘'Have I slept here all night? I might have tumbled out. Why, what ever is the matter? Have I only dreamed that I had bobbed hair? My hair, it is down to my knees! And Oh, how stiff they are . I feel as I've imagined a woman of thirty-five must feel. After extraordinary efforts I managed to scramble down out of the tree, ejaculating meanwhile. I'm glad the basketball girls aren't here to see me now'. Dear me there's the bell'. 1 11 have to fly without going in to breakfast'. As I ran toward Old Catawba High there was nothing there but a lawn to the Baptist church. I walked dazedly back out to the drug store and asked where I could find the school house. A clerk told me the bus was just leaving out on the square. As we traveled toward the new consolidated high school on Highway 70, I told the driver he looked very familiar with his very curly hair and dimples. He offered the information that his father had curly hair and I knew in an instant be meant Jerry Sharpe. He said his father was still working in Elliott Knitting Mill. When we arrived at school, I stepped off the bus and was stared at considerably. I stared back at a man with a mustache who was unmistakably Mr. Jones. We climbed the stairs together as he told me Clyde Moore, new county farm agent, was to visit the school that day. “Here comes Mrs. Sain, said Mr. Jones, and undoubtedly Christine Robinson was approaching us. She was due to teach a French class in a few minutes. In the meantime she told me James Lowrance was now depot agent after his father’s retirement. In her hand she held a letter from Martha Frazier telling her of her new job at Mercy Hospital in Asheville as medical secretary to Dr. Clifford Bond, nose, ear and throat specialist. The bell rang then but Christine promised to meet me for lunch. Having nothing else to do I walked across the road to the Super Market. I met T. N. Campbell, manager of the store. I walked back through the store and there stood Pansy Hubbard buying groceries. We chatted a few minutes. She told me she was buying a deep freezer that afternoon from Ray Lowrance who sold electric appliances in a warehouse of his own in Hickory. Pansy had just moved into her new home near Newton. Pansy had to go then as she was going to Hickory to get an order she had placed in Peggy Sigmon's dress shoppe. After talking with several people to pass the time away until lunch I went to the lunch- room to meet Christine. During lunch she told me Hazel Yount had married a lawyer from Maiden and had become his financial secretary. I asked Christine what she did after lunch and she told me she had a study class while Hubert Setzer coached basketball to both boys and girls. 16 Juniors BETTY BOGGS ROYD BOWMAN MACK BRIDGES VIRGINIA HUFFMAN PHYLLIS KALE RAYNELL MATTHEWS President ----- -Royd Bowman Vice-President - Raynell Mathews Secretary ------ Wayne Moore Treasurer- - - - Virginia Huffman 18 Betty Boggs, Royd Bowmen - - - - - - Martha Myers, Mack Bridges - - - - - Virginia Huffman, Jimmy Morrow - - Betty Boggs, Jimmy Morrow - - — - Raynell Mathews, Mack Bridges — - Betty Boggs, Wayne Moore ------ Phyllis Kale, Jimmy Morrow - - - - - Raynell Mathews, Wayne Moore - - -- Phyllis Kale, Royd Bowman - - - - - Virginia Huffman, Billy Setzer - - - - Betty Boggs, Mack Bridges ------ Phyllis Kale.
