REFERENCE-- NOT TO BE TAKEN FROM THIS ROOM 1983SAYAKINI Volume 54 CATAWBA COLLEGE SALISBURY, NORTH CAROLINA Co-Editors: JILL MARIE FINK BEVERLY SUE PRICE CATAWBA COLLEGE LIBRARY Salisbury, North Carolina 28144 10 11 12 mimEmMsmz w 13 , f h 14 16 17 DEDICATION DR. BRUCE GRIFFITH Many people contend that one ' s desire to learn must come from within. This is not always true. A student may never be a scholar, but one who is has been shaped into becoming one. Those stu- dents who have been encouraged and inspired by enthusiasm and wisdom owe gratitude to a special group of people: their profes- sors. One man of knowledge and taleni who has taught and inspired many is Dr. Bruce Griffith. For your ability and application of experi- ence, we thank and respect you. 18 MEMORIAL MR. PETER COOPER God doesn ' t gamble! There are no dice in Heaven. A giant dove delivers the message. The silk is soft and white. It is tied to the dove ' s leg With a strand of Aphrodite ' s hair. When the dove reaches home The tender scroll is unrolled. As writings touch wind, the act is performed. Tears fall by box. But, boxes hold only a vehicle of being. The being we loved follows doves To the Total Calm Of Paradise. 19 FACULTY Dr. Stephen H. As a matter of fact, you may be the hit of the party! Here everyone wears an outrageous hat. Whatever the hat or personality, everyone had a blast. 63 HALLOWEEN DANCE The lobby was the home for the insane on Halloween. Each person became what he only fantasized about earlier. These foggy-minded adults took on their true personalities. Everyone was at the party, from Charles Lindburg to M M ' s. That just goes to show what a little education can do. 64 65 CLASSES SENIOR CANDIDS To golf or not to golf Doug Northcutt Amy McCachren Randy Hart, Melissa Rowe. and Mark Hi I Execution Suppressed due to severity of errors Kim Vinoski 68 k %i ' v. To those who have served so well, fond memories shall prevail. Though the hours were long and the tasks often tedious, the students of Catawba were our concern, because the students were the Association. There is no greater reward than knowing you have done your best in so little time. Those whose photographs you see on these pages served as liasons between the student body and the faculty of Catawba, not only in their elected capacity, but to improve and enrich faculty relationships, traditions and pride in Catawba. Look to the future, there lies the challenge. Look not to the past, but rather move forward with each passing day and do not be afraid to ask about that you do not understand. The Bad Apple has quietly slipped into the annals of history. The editors or the Bad Apple decided to add a little spice to the literary world and felt a change was in order — thus, the ARROWHEAD was born. Job well done Laura. Jill and Bev, I just don ' t know what Catawba will do without your smiling faces to brighten the pages of the SAYAKINI. (You too Howard.) Cal, you and the staff have been superb! Thanks for the hard work. Who could forget the Big B and Paul of WNDN. Keep plugging at funky vibes. Last, but not least, the advisors! It cannot be said enough — thanks for your time and assistance in making the Media Board function properly. The Arrowhead provides stu- dents with an opportunity to publish their creative works. One of its primary goals is the promoting of the liberal arts on campus. Any- one interested and having some background in literature is eligible for membership on the staff. Students, faculty, and staff are wel- come to submit poetry, prose, art. and photography for publication. This year, the name has been changed from Bad Apple to The Arrowhead: Catawba ' s Point of Expression which presents the optimistic feelings that go with the magazine and the school. 214 Dreams Shimmering, Shimmering, But quietly. Sparkling and quiet — Hushing ocean waves ease onto the sandy shore. Perfect day for hand in hand in heart romance. Silver wings sweep pockets of clouds and dip and stop on land ... a little clumsily, But one gull is smooth, and sure, and perfect . . . Except for one leg, forgotten under the feathers.
