Hunched over a black desk, endlessly turning webbed volumes of forgotten lore. Someone very special ... in the darkness. Armed! Armed with the heart of knowledge, the sparkling eyes of enthusiasm, and the voice of experience. With the lift of a lip comes the glow, a blinding flash of white. The glow of inspiration! Twenty guns sound a salute from us to you! 17 £W? FACULTY Dr. Stephen H. North Carolina 28144 49 STUDENT LIFE SPRING FEST APRIL 25, 1981 It was a bright and sunny day. The jubilant crowd was held back by the restraining lines. The beautiful girls were all in a row. Maurice successfully finished playing Taps and the afternoon was ready to begin. Each lovely contestant was introduced and escorted to the stage. It ' s been said that Claremont was a little upset that they missed the swimsuit competition. They soon got over it and decided to sit quietly backstage and chug some PBR ' s. Pandemonium broke loose, cameras snapped and people cheered when Rande Maphis was introduced as the May Queen. Claremont finally did get revenge on the judges for not allowing them to see the interesting competition, and they gave the head judge ' s car a boost — up a tree. ■M 52 SENIORS: Teresa Perkins, Barb Smith, Janet Stapf JUNIORS: Mary Battista, Julie Honeycutt and Melanie Smith . - SOPHOMORES: Judy Chwalik, Kim Cropper and Lisa Long FRESHMEN: Lynne Dedmon, Katie Branson and Marcia Hoover 53 MIKE CROSS SEPTEMBER 5, 1981 54 MAD HATTER PARTY Hfif ? ' — JLf J t I ■1 K L 1 m i - ■' H i w Dust off grandmothers hat that you found in the corner and bring it to the party. Although it may have a faded, four-foot peacock feather running up the back of a purple and yellow bonnet, it ' s still okay at Catawba. As a matter of fact, you may be the life of the party. Here everyone wears an outrageous hat! some hats even show personalities: little people wear tiny hats, people who have dreamed of being a cowboy wear a cowboy hat, and baseball caps go to the big leaguers. If a person wears a blue and white baby bonnet they are . well ... urn ... leave that up to your imagination. Whatever the hat or personality, everyone kicked back and rocked. So grasp that beer in your hand and have a toast before we suck down this brew. To Jerry ' s kids, this one ' s for you. 55 HALLOWEEN DANCE The lobby was a home for the in- sane on Halloween 1981. Each per- son became what he only fantasized about earlier; these foggy-minded young adults took on theirtrue per- sonalities. In the corner of the dance floor a prep could be seen dancing with a gorilla, (both outfits were just as horrible looking . . . preps, yuk!) There was Mr. Bill, and Superman made his appearance also. Through the door the princes and princesses arrived. Everyone was at the party from Joan Crawford to the Phantom of the Opera. That just goes to show you what a little education can do. 56 57 AIR BAND It must have been a full moon. The music was loud, the beer ran cold, and the entertainment was tremendous. Bands were in head-to-head competition for the gold. The crowd led the Four Skins to first prize. (Do the beetle stomp!) Oh, by the way Jay, watch the whip! Second prize was awarded to Zug-Zug. (Shake it Maurice.) Who was that girl? Third prize went to Sex Change. (Didn ' t know you had it in you Dave!) What a scarf! The other bands walked away with zip bucks, but did get a buzz to last a lifetim e. y s % ' 1 w W4 Ljjk 1 r f Aj ill J WW - . kii jf fgf ' it 1 58 59 1981 HOMECOMING To make up for last year . . . here ' s homecoming. With 23 of Catawba ' s loveliest women. Alongside, their distinguished escorts. And what about that Queen? Julie, you ' re a doll! Then everybody cruised out to Fiber ' s to party. We may have been ail dressed up, but that didn ' t stop us from getting sloppy drunk. (That ' s where that darn bus came in handy . . . good idea!) Even our dignified deans were going for it . . . and who could forget Fred and Ginger Hartsell? For many people that next morning was a disaster. Well, almost everyone. The clean-up crew had an interesting morning I heard. A night to go down in the books. So, from the infamous mouth of one of Catawba ' s psychotics, the night was put into perspective . . . Welcome to Sherwood. No, this isn ' t the Olympics, but the stakes were just as high! Each runner on that track was trying to prove to his or her best friend that those extra pounds don ' t mean a thing. BANC, they ' re off! You won ' t see anybody sprinting off the starting line in this Catawba fundraiser. The campus became a college (like the ones you see on tv). People jogged and the bands jammed and everybody partied. The bands, Mike Prillamen, Crystal wood, Mark Deaton, and Full Circle Band, performed for a sun-drugged crowd. The blankets and ice coolers were the pieces of the jigsaw field. Lie back folks and enjoy ... run and drink yourself crazy. 64 65 CLASSES SENIOR CANDIDS Great Expectations — Roy A. Partly cloudy with a slight chance of percipitation by mid-morning. While under one dull desk lamp slaved the ingenius editors of the campus BOOK, self-inducing shots of caffeine. All this just to make a deadline! In the limelight, with fingers punching electric buttons at lightning speed and James Bond accuracy, is Madam Fink. At her side is the equally venemous, whose feet are being eaten by pages, the Baronness Bev. Trying to sort the confusion awaits Liz, quietly. And for an encore performance sits Jeff, on experience. The magic comes with the drop of the hat, the opening of a door, the sparkle from above, and the recycled syllables fall light, like an autumn leaf on the people below. Along this Odyssey lie treacherous turns, alas! Over a beaten trail march our heroes; they talk in a drawout studder. The glow from above boils their eyes deep in their sockets. Bleeding fingers downstairs, avoiding curtain calls, take their private bows. And then above a light of order, showing the way. Finally the director of a harmonic symphony pointing for flute, punching for horn. Then a crushing end . . . while a shaky curtain rises over a beautiful unison. 191 cDie j mner J£ivn$iv$ by Milan stitt Directed by: John Harris Set Design by: Richard Seagle Light Design by: John Harris Master Carpenter Bill Delaney sound by: Joan Meehan CAST Father Rivard David Oxendine Amos Scot McCachren Erna Prindle Linda Kesler Toby Felker Bill Delaney Sister Rita Teresa Free Mrs. Shandig Amy McCachren Prosecutor Kevin Smith Monsignor Nicholson Kevin Hardison Louise Margaret Frauendorfer 192 DAY STUDENT COUNCIL The Day student Council ' s function is to attempt in every way possible, to enhance the campus life for the Day Students. It soon turns the earth to a hard, chalky piece of brown ice, and causes the grass to become green sabers of the army ants retreating. It stalks the daisy. Creeping slowly from blade to blade. It reaches the golden root. And attacks! The daisy prays to the sun for strength to fight cold decay. The sun replies: Your days of daisy are to end. The chill wont be long. But the sun pities the little daisy and grants time for the flower to have a final dream. The daisy, now its white petals threatened by the burn of winter, takes its time to sustain its purpose. Frost consumes the yellow pillow of the bumblebee and the daisy stands still. Then the burning sun appears and sends the wilted daisy tumbling to the earth. Its tiny head weeps in the dust. Five small fingers then pull at its neck. While pink lips find a pillow, fated. And the life of love is breathed into the gray petals of a tender monument. 273 275 276 •a .m— «■■a l _ 277 278 279 TCIF!! Thank God It ' s FINISHED!! When we accepted this job we never realized what a tremendous responsi- bility we had undertaken. But somehow, through lots of blood, sweat and tears we made it. And we are truly proud of the yearbook we have produced. Our job has been made easier with the help of some very fine people whom we wish to acknowledge. Our sincere thanks are extended to Dave Setzer for his expert advice, Robert Wiedner for his pictures of Dial M for Murder, Bob Chappell of Hunter Publishing for taking his time to answer our many questions, and Jeff schaeberle for more things than we have room to list. Three more people deserve an enormous pat on the back for their help. Elizabeth Weant has done a fantastic job as business manager, not to mention all the final layouts, typing and other odd jobs she ' s done. The beautifully written copy you have read throughout the book was expertly done by James Spider Withee. we wanted something different and he supplied it. We hope you like it as much as we do. A final thanks goes to Howard Simmons, our head photographer. Without his photography talents, this yearbook wouldn ' t have been possible. He was always willing to help us in any way he could, and brought into the office a much needed calming effect. Thanks for your time and patience Howard. It ' s hard to believe that our edition of the SAYAKINI is complete, it ' s been a long year, measured by picture appointments and deadlines, but our job is finally over. We hope you enjoy the 1982 SAYAKINI! Bev and Jill
