Not only is the weather pleasant, but it is a time for being with friends that are soon to graduate. Mixed in amongst the dart throwing and pie eating are quiet, friendly moments that will be remembered for many years. Ole Mother Nature threatened and the 1980 Spring Fest was transported to the gymnasium. None the less the experiences were enjoyable. The traditional dance about the May Pole was culminated by the crowning of Jodi Wild as Spring Fest Queen by Student Body Presi- dent Mark Alexander. During the first semester singers Brian and Eileen Crawford, James Durst, Mike Wilhelm, Lowell Smith, Cindy Wright, Barry Link and Mike Prillaman performed. Visiting the annual gathering, one could see punk rockers, Hawkeye and Trapper of M A S H, two sperms, an Iranian with his American hostage, a radical turned preppie, plus many other ingenius creations. The Halloween dance provided a chance for students to remove themselves from academic routine and go bananas. 52 iir: j|; g2J__ ■ ■ 1 •M S ' ■ I I OBDON A. With nothing but clear skies over- head, alumni were found all over campus reminiscing about almost forgotten days of love and laughter. Meeting that old roommate and that one time special friend after many years brought smiles to the faces of Catawba ' s finest. Current students at Catawba have much to look forward to in the future as they return to the campus that was their place to be. 1980 HOMECOMING QUEEN Brooke Weaver i Nancy Brasington Claremont Kathy Clark Foi] House-SR-C Sarah Day Senior Class Carmen Gonzalez Zartman Julie Honeycutt Woodson Marcy Hook Senior Class Marda Hoover Abemethy 3 4 54 Kathy Kooi Abemethy 1 2 Rande Maphis SR-A B Monica Morrison Day Students Terry Murko Day Students Elizabeth Peeler Newton-Jann House Lynn Poffenbarger North Lisa Simon SR-D E Barb Smith Senior Class Janet Stapf North Julie Strawn Woodson 55 CATAWBA COLLEGE MADRIGAL DINNER There ' s no fool like a fool ' s fool; says court jester Richard Boyd. The Catawba College Choir, garbed in Medieval dress, presented an evening of music, enter- tainment, and fine food for the Salisbury community. From the roast boar to the jugglers and jesters the choir transformed itself into an English entertairung troupe. 56 57 ASSASSINATION They were hiding in bushes, on rooftops, and behind doors. With hearts of steel and senses as sharp as a razor, they moved about the Catawba campus. They were assassins and the game was bold murder. Yes, the latest college craze, Assassination, struck Catawba in the fall of 1980. Armed with dart guns, Cat-U students stalked their victims. A simple game, Assassination works on the principle of kill your assignment before someone kills vou. The winners, or sun. ' ivors, were Steve Taylor in round one and Alan Armour in round two. The award for most kills went to Clare Killer Arthur and second place to Bill Angle of Death Styple. After streaking, toga parties, and Assassination, one onlv wonders what the college mind will dream up next. 58 SALISBURY POST photos by Wayne Hinshaw ' 68 59 COLLEGE NIGHT Here we go again, it ' s College Night! Time for the Catawba student to trade the books and papers for a cold glass of his or her favorits brew. Once a week, and in some cases seven, the center of activity was the dance floor, local bar, or a large pizza. Some- times it seemed that the economy of Salisbury depended on Cat- U students to survive. Catawba College gave us many important things, but perhaps the most important was a plastic I.D. card that got us into College Night. 60 SOUTHERN PRIDE S T y K B m ,-• .jxi .jmr ' m lf.7. :? y KS Ht • . . | V v l 61 DOING IT IN THE SNOW sS SSSTC Catawba received its yearly allotment of the white stuff in late January. The campus awoke on Friday morning to two inches of snow with five more to follow. An air of hope spread as students listened for the report of classes being canceled. The hoped for word never came and the day ' s fun was delayed till afternoon. Let it be known that snow and Cat-U students mix very well. From ambushing motorists on In- nes Street to bombarding classmates departing the dining hall. Catawba snow warriors were out in full force. Artistic talents also arose as nu- merous snowmen and one snow butch popped up on campus. 62 r-tl — II ! Coming off a dismal 3-5 mark in 1979, the team was expected to improve under the direction of newly -appointed head coach Steve Shaughnessy. But the team continued its decline, going 1-10 overall and winless in all the seven conference games. The record is deceiving to a degree, however, as the Tribe lost several games by less than ten points. Injuries and mistakes continued to plague the team, especially in the waning moments of close games. The killer instinct was not present in times that it should have been. The effort, nonetheless, was always there even though it ended in despair. No matter what you call the sport, soccer has established itself at Catawba. With an attitude of working hard and hard circum- stances the Catawba men gained a sense of team work. Team captains were Bill Crute and Lowell Sprague. Along with these team leaders, a major inspiration was Mickey O ' Conelly . Coach O ' Conelly, a third division pro soccer player from England, gave much of his time for the sake of the Catawba Soccer team. Take an overall record of 3 and 4, combined with an enthusiastic atmosphere and much experience and the final product is a team of good sports- men that is going to be tough on opponents next year. Everyone ' s predictions were fulfilled as the Indians worked their way to the Carolinas Conference regular season championship. Cat-U fans were dazzled by the shooting of Andrew Matthews and the under the board work of Dwayne Brewington and Matt Weber. Noah Mason and Dwayne Grant excelled everywhere and led the team. A good thinking point guard was found in Bradd Eldridge. Backing up an impressive starting five was an impressive bench. Mike Cutter, Johnny Miller, Cleve McCrae, and Antwan Washington were all called upon to add their special talents. With the addition of heighth and speed on the court, the team is sure to improve with the experience gained this year. Captain Gayle Wyatt held the team together through an unsuccessful season. Enthusiasm and determination were characteristic marks of the Lady Indians. Living in the shadows of a great men ' s basketball team, the women are hoping to come into their own light next year. Now that its over, I can ' t say that I regret changing my mind. Editing a yearbook is an experience unlike any other. The frustrations can get to you but in the end it ' s all worthwhile. There are many people who deserve thanks for making this book possible. Our advisor, Dave Setzer, has again been an invaluable help. Bob Weidner ' s advice and help in buying our new enlarger was greatly appreciated as was the SGA ' s money. Dale Waltman, Ross Klopp, and Hap Welty made this yearbook possible with their dedication and hard work. The cover drawing is by Dr. Bruce Griffith, Professor of History. There are two people who deserve special thanks. Teri Fulk and Bev Price, my associate editors, worked extremely hard in producing this book. They have become very special friends over the past two years. I will always cherish the good times that we have had together. Teri and Bev deserve particular credit for putting up with my deadline jitters and my flying pencils. Finally, thanks to Catawba College for the four best years of my life. Despite all of her problems, there ' s no place I ' d rather be. 280
