The Indians started the season by losing five games in a row. The second half of the season was much more suc- cessful as Coach Warren Klawiter ' s team won three of six games, including the Parents ' Weekend and Homecoming wins. They finished their 3-8 season with a 13-0 win over Lenoir Rhyne. Probably the most memorable event of the season was Coach Klawiter ' s rumored deci- sion to resign at the end of the season. Klawi- ter ' s later decision to stay was met with mixed reaction. • m m jmmm ,. Mtam . The team had a poor record, but had the repu- tation of playing the game because they like to play soccer. They did not play for the crowds since there weren ' t any crowds, did not play for scholarships since there were few of those, and did not play for women (at least on the field) since few women watched them play, but they played for the game itself. This field hockey team is considered by many to be a high spirited, close knit group of young women. They stick together. In addition, the 1979 season was played by a young team for the most part. These ladies are going to be playing some good hockey for a long time to come. Probably, the most overriding characteristic of this team is the high spirit that is ever present among the players. A lack of depth combined with a long, tiring season contributed to a difficult year for the Catawba Volleyball team. After a few humiliating setbacks at the first of the season, people were getting worried, but the Indians came back to put themselves in contention for the Carolinas Conference Championship. So there we were in the championship game eyeball to eyeball with those tough cookies from High Point College who had already crumbled twice between the jaws of a Catawba attack. However, the action-packed first minute and a half proved to be part of a plodding High Point ploy to put Catawba ' s play plan in pudding. Fast game or slow, Catawba sti came out on top with a score of 10 to 9. A year ' s worth of hard work and a remarkable string of wins were part of a team that we can all be proud of. Wrestling is the kind of activity where you either go all out to be the best, or you ' ll get beat. Wrestling takes a total commitment. The Catawba wrestlers under the leadership of Coach Dutch Meyer have pulled out another tough, but winning season. The team was few in number to begin with, but managed to shrink even farther as the season progressed. Their season was long and grueling and injuries were common, but the team went on. Catawba wrestlers con- tinued to pull out winning seasons in spite of the injuries, the hard work, and the little fan support. The team deserves our respect for the dedication, the desire to perform, and their pride in this sport. Front Row: Dave Hinkle, Pat Price, Jay Gerish, Gordie Morrison, Bob Budd, and Dave Reed. We have added another long night to the production of this yearbook. All in all, this has been a very rewarding experience. We have gained a valuable insight into Catawba College along with many new friends, incompletes, and ulcers. We wouldlike to thank the students of Catawba College for their cooperation and patience. We would especially like to thank David Setzer, without whom our job would have been a lot harder. Special thanks also go to Bob Chappell of Hunter Publishing for his expert guidance, Bob Weidner for his pictures of Tartuffe, and Mrs. Mar- garet Armstrong for typing our numerous notices. Dale Waltman and Donna Palmer deserve special credit for their faithful service. Donna did a great job as business manager and Dale was always there when we needed him for a last minute picture. Biv Price and Barbie Smith have stayed up with us all night and we are very grateful. Editing this book has been both fun and trying but we think that it has paid off. We hope that you agree!
