University of Richmond; Ph.D., The Ohio State University HEAD HON C HO -OUR BELOVED ' I don ' t know Martin, what do you think? Dr. Martin Shotzberger — a distin- guished — looking man who gener- ates warmth with his every nod and smile. His acknowledgement of a stu- dent while in passing creates in that individual a feeling of importance and a sense of worth. His capacity for knowledge and un- derstanding is constantly in view of the student every time he opens his mouth to speak. Words of wisdom flow unendlessly. Dr. Shotzberger is a man dedicated to his work and this dedication is re- vealed in his undying love of each student. He remains in contact with the student feeling that college helps develop the student at times more than homelife. President Shotzberger is convinced that the attitude change toward col- lege is more prevalent among stu- dents now than in previous years. The atmosphere on campus, he feels, has a greater tendency toward warm- ness and friendliness and this is evi- dent in his sincere attitude toward life as a whole. Dr. Martin L. Being co-editors of Sayakini is that kind of situation. It is a position, not unlike other positions, that has its ups and downs; however, the rewards we have received are beyond measure. The friends we have made are ones who deserve medals for perseverance. In spite of difficulty, they were always there without having to be asked and without having to ask what they could do to help. We extend to these special few our sincere gratitude. We wish especially to thank Jeff Schaeberle, Keith Houser, Blanchi Janism, and Janice Elliot for sharing their expertise in photography and printing and Dave Setzer for his expertise in all areas. We are most grateful, too, for Bill Styple ' s beautiful oil painting of the old Indian, whose wrinkled face reflects wisdom just as the walls of old Catawba remind us of the wisdom contained within. We thank Alan Turner for the insight to the human condition provided by his copy, and we thank Debbie Wilkerson for being responsible for advertisements. A sincere apology is offered to all seniors whose candids do not appear in Sayakini. When the camera with the film of these candids was stolen, the matter was beyond our control even though we tried diligently to correct the situation. As co-editors, we believe the last word should be the best. We have reserved our last word to pay tribute to one worthy of any honor that we may give him, to one who deserves only the best. For eleven full years he has given his best effort to Catawba — as friend, teacher, and counselor to students; as an exemplar of both independence and interdependence to the entire college community; and as a leader who bears his awesome responsibilities with both grace and courage. Thus, with this 1979 Sayakini we honor President Martin Luther Shotzberger. £- ' TO vue L v OviLCOu SU O orvu ESSE
