Some are conducting an archaeological and geological survey of selected sections of the Uwharrie National Forest for the United States Forest Service. So far over 5500 acres have been surveyed and many historic and prehistoric sites discoverd. Other club members and interested students are working on a large archaeological project near Asheboro. This summer anthro. field school students will have an opportunity to do a variety of anthropological work, including excavation of sites found during the above surveys. Last summer, we conducted surveys, test excavations, and formal excavations, including a large Federal project and several private ones. A great deal of archaeological and geological data has been made available to the field of study, including some major discoveries. Catawba is one of the few schools conducting archaeological and geological research in this area and are nationally recognized for this. The anthro. students undertook the movement of the museum from the Library to Heath Hill Forest. It was a student organized project and it was accomplished in 2Vz days at a savings to the college of over two thousand dollars. As soon as the fuel shortage and time permits, the museum will be re-opened with a big Open House.
