Many changes have occurred and you have been a part of those changes. Always inter- ested in seeing students work to the height of their abilities, you have en- couraged and given time to them willingly and un- selfishly. All of these and many more are the reasons we have dedi- cated our 1975-1976 yearbook to you, Mrs. Martha Kirkland West. HALFWAY DOWN by A.A. Milne Halfway down the stairs Halfway up the stairs is a stair Where I sit. There isn ' t any Other stair Quite like It. I ' m not at the bottom I ' m not at the top; So this is the stair Where I always Stop. Isn ' t up. And isn ' t down. It isn ' t in the nursery, It isn ' t in the town. And all sorts of funny thoughts Run round my head: It isn ' t really Anywhere! It ' s somewhere else Instead! mmBmam ' s ' . ' ■ ' - ' ■- ' .-. ' mi 10 BraHi H 11 m ■ I Dr. Martin L. Skip Huston Catawba has a feeling of closeness — at times, it seems too close with everybody talking. Yet, I ' ve enjoyed it and feel I ' ve learned a lot about ' myself and grown up a great deal. I ' m ready now to get out there in the world (not just because of being at Catawba — just ready to finish school) Dana Stafford What is college? Most important of all, college is a chance to be yourself and to give of yourself while getting so much in return. Joe Holmes I ' ll never forget my four years at Catawba College. The many good tiroes I have had here could not be Tep laced, Phyllis Elaine Weant College is like a wringer washer. It feels so good to get through it. Martha Thompson I will always cherish the friends thai I met during my four years on this campus. They are the i mportaut part of my college years. Pam Beck If the essence of living is learning; then Catawba shall live forever. Janet Hilker Catawba has taught me alot. That ' s what it taught me . . . how to spell a lot!!! bUs ' I ' ll always remember the good Christian friends that I have had the pleasure to meet at Catawba. Roddy When we arrived here il was said Catawba was like a prostitute, it screwed you and took your money. Well, after four years of the ins and outs, all I can say is it was a good lay. BRC Catawba for me — A lot of laughter, tears, and hard work. It ' s given me more than I ' ll ever be able to repay. CAD Good-bye! It was fun. Rosie The chimes of the chapel fill Catawba with music. anonymous It ' s over and I ' m glad, but I wouldn ' t have missed it for the world. anonymous These four years have been ones in which education would have to rank second to the friends I have made and hopefully to my progress toward maturity. This year such activities as: a tea for the Freshmen girls, a float for Home- coming, carnation sale for mothers at Parent ' s Weekend, sponsoring an exam break, sup- porting the Women Athletic games, a Christmas dinner, and our biggest project — a Career Day for Women. The Career Day was January 17, 1976 in the Crystal Lounge. The keynote speaker Mrs. Doris Jones spoke about women ' s role in today ' s world. Thirty-six profes- sional women lead groups and a luncheon was held. Area and local high school girls and Catawba women were guests. Activities planned for the rest of the year include our goal to be an organization for the Women of Catawba. Well, our band started the year by helping to raise en- thusiasm at all the home games by playing a va- riety of cheering songs such as Hail To the Redskins. They also traveled, upon invitation, to the Catawba vs. Lenoir Rhyne game to support our Indians at that annual rivalry. While supporting the football team, the band was preparing for a concert which was held on November 6 in Keppel Auditorium. A concert is usually given each quarter by this organization of about 40 members. Open to all students inter- ested in playing an instrument, they rehearse twice a week. All periods and styles of music are performed by these musicians, from Classical to Modern. There is a smaller group within the band which is known for playing more popular, dance style music. This group is called the Stage Band and meets twice a week. There is also an ensemble for those who enjoy the sounds of Dixieland Jazz. The brass section of the band, known commonly as the Bras s Ensemble, performs as a separate en- tity of the Band. They have performed this year at convocations, the Special 50th Anniversary of the college program, with the choir, and at sev- eral of the churches in the area. president 166 167 H warn Brass Ensemble 1st row — Alan Turner, Craig Sloop, Charlie Bartleson, Ruth Hurst, Lee Hurry, Carl Haynes, Ron Kirk, Don Gale, Dr. Bond. 2nd row — Jeri Jones, Brenda Blankenship, Jim Stallings, Stuart Smith, Rick Brake, Harry Smith. 168 Modern Ensemble •SS.I Front Row — Dr. Bond, Nancy Cook, Meg MacPherson, Sylvia Guffey, Elizabeth Hinson.
