Many facets of the Catawba College campus and the community have been enriched by this one man. To honor one for his caring for and devotion to his fellow man we proudly dedicate the 1972 Sayakini to our friend, Mr. Karl E. Hales. 1! ■I CO -ACADEMIC ACTIVITIES FIRST QUARTER OCT 21 NOV NOV tO— 13 WCA 5TONS0RE LECTURES 8 15 CONCERT SERIES RAYMOND LEWENTHAL PIANIST 16 ROOM SERVICE | 00 OR FIEDLER || 00 CHAPEL 8 15 MUSIC DEPT PRODUCTION I.1 '  «!IWI1I How the world changes in a single minute, an hour, a day. When you look, how Catawba has changed during the past four years which seem like yesterday. What senior can forget the first year in which we suffered through Saturday classes? We laugh with a serious tone while whispering under our breath something about today ' s freshmen Having it so good. We can still remember when everyone was required to attend all classes except three each semester. The holidays certainly seemed shorter then. Every Wednesday our attendance was required at chapel and convocations. We never went to chapel without our books and our reading material to keep us busy while listening to the speaker. And now they call it Co-Academic. The curriculum has been changing so much since 1968 that we have not had time to stop and decide how we feel about it. We are still adjusting to the new quarter system which has replaced the old semester system, lust as we are beginning to unders tand it; for, after all, it is progress; some smart educator, who knows more than we, comes along and tells us that the quarter system is no different and no better than the old semester system. And we are still progressing. However, the seniors can not help but moan a little when they discover that they did not have to take math after all. Our library has kept up with the times in at least one aspect. It has done so by broadening its literary materials by subscribing to Playboy and Mad Magazine. A group of concerned students worked hard to establish a literary magazine on campus and interest in creative writing has swelled since the advent of Bad Apple. 3s sr if y • - ' . ■2l HWVtJ ■- 1 I CENTER Catawba has not ceased to grow and she will continue to be a growing and changing campus. A new addition on the campus scene is the much needed art department. We have been waiting for years for adequate art classes and now we have received a very talented professor who is filling the prolonged void. Catawba has also been the recipient of two new buildings, the Hoke Student Center and Goodman Gymnasium. Consider two years ago when we used to travel to Boyden ' s High School gym to watch our basketball team play. We now have a student union which has become the hub of social life. With the coming of this new structure, we had little notion that we were creating pool and ping pong addicts. In the midst of this change there is still some tradition at Catawba. Much to the chagrin of many students, particularly those living in Zartman Hall and North Hall, the victory bell continues to ring out its presence on campus. iinticn MESS3 •■vFm i ' ' : -li I. r 1 ? , i S wk ' - HRT pa© Sd BBks d. W ' IryJfifcyflSL Hm. : H i 3 32 ' A Una h it U ' JSZ One of the most needed changes at Catawba is the change which has taken place in the cafeteria. Many students are grateful that SAGA Food Services found its way to our college. The women students are also thankful that the dress code changed to allow slacks in classes, the library, the cafeteria, and the canteen. We remember the time that women were not allowed to have bare feet in their own social hall. Other changes affecting the women involve the liberalized women ' s hours. From a curfew of 12:30 a.m. Saturday nights, we have progressed to the key system which allows women to establish their own hours. The freshmen, too, have been affected by changes. They are now allowed to have cars on campus, a far cry from previous requirements of grade point average and class level. 10 ill! wmmm mm % a -%■= A. 12 . 0ggfggmfM i ■SPS S ,. W A 1 1 1 H. C ■Catawba has changed since yesterday but she still remains to be the same campus which welcomes each new student and says good bye to each old friend. It is true that the old rules were archaic and almost anachronistic but now we can see the future of Catawba as she changes to meet the new times. We will not forget how students were finally allowed to have alcohol on campus, were allowed to live off campus, how the campus was swept with the bicycle rage, and how Catawba gave us so much when we asked for so little. Few will forget the beautiful campus of Catawba College as each year the fall leaves rained their blanket of color, then disappeared, and were found again each new spring. 13 1 ACADEMICS Dr. Shotzberger Dr. Martin L. People like Hubert Schmauch, Susan Van Schaick, and Sally Watters used their minds and their skills to create the college yearbook. Everyone involved in this production shared in the art of creativity. The only words to describe our work are that it was hard but it was a fantastic experience. Editor Vincent Withers and feature editor Marsha Kessler went all out to solicit the assistance of all interested students to help add a sense of relevance to this year ' s newspa- per. The size of the staff was greatly increased and most of the new members quickly showed a desire to become actively involved. A new idea which the staff innovated was a weekly newsletter which would be published on those weeks when the Pioneer was not published. The Pioneer is the student newspaper and it strives through the cooperative efforts of its staff members to keep the students abreast to the happenings and to give the students an opportu- nity to express themselves. Psychology Club It is sometimes hard to describe what a club is, for several reasons. It is different to every member simply because our club is our peo- ple. The club saw alot of problems at the beginning of the year, but managed to reach some goals. We have worked hard this year, having dances, speakers, trips, as well as organizing committees for such ideas as fund raising, lay counseling, bull sessions. We have much to give as a club, and welcome anyone to join! ■MM Student Christian Association Doing things for others in the name of true religion is the key to the Student Christian Association. Dedication, commitment, and faithfulness in doing your thing for Cod and the people of God is the central ideal of the organization. All Catawbans are fa- miliar with the live Nativity Scene, Singspirations, Religious Perspectives Week, the Nazareth Childrens Home, The Place, Be Gentle When You Touch Bread, Voluntary Worship Services on Sunday Mornings, Advent Candlelight Service, carolling, and the Biloxi, Mississippi Project. We have been but a few among the many people who have kept Catawba alive. This institution thrives on its students, tor we are the people who make it Catawba College and not just another institu- tion. With our minds we have unlocked this tower of knowledge; we have been the seekers of the truth. WE have made our conquests and have learned the meaning of failure; how hard it was to learn. How hard it was to learn so many things — to smile in the face of defeat; to be humble after our victories; to maintain the quest for knowledge; to always seek for those answers which are ever so fleeting. We are the students of Catawba College and we put forth a challenge to the students who are yet to be. Come to our school — and if you come to our heart you will find a friend. 253 I ' :■' ■' :■■. ■me- -yf fSti? , i ' .- Lynn Jones, Photographer p  V 1 ti %R m pi % i; « -: Hamp Shuford, Photographer g| Mill F W ' 1 fc J - feL fcfes ■- ' W wfc ' i ' A If ' ti - .JS: _ • T Si - 3 7 i -i. i.«J f.gt g g ;i 1 ' - k ,— 1 ■«CT aj ' -P.. ■Hi !?«-fW-4 f f 1 — — 1 A . b H - 257 £y I 258 r ' _;: .. m- m-m Sit:-??? The lives that we have come to touch are now deep within our memories. We see them in the illusive shadows of days gone by. The smiling faces of friends we shall forever behold in our mind ' s eye. The days we spent together seem like a moment ago. It was just a moment ago that we shared our dreams, that we saw each other. In each other ' s face we saw the light of our own dreams. We spoke many words, shed many tears, and had many laughs. We lived together but we must leave separately, each to his own way. The roads we travel will cross the paths of many others and we will continue the life process. As we now take leave of Catawba College, others are coming in on the road that we must lake out — and we both have only just begun.
