PRESIDENT- DR. A. R. KEPPEL - To the Members of the 1963 Graduating Class It is only right that you should feel proud over your accomplishment of having earned a bachelor of arts degree from an institution of higher education which itself has reason to be proud of its distinguished his- tory and its distinguished alumni. But, at best, such pride is unwarranted and extravagant unless it truly springs from an innermost spirit of abject humility. It was indeed a man who possessed such a mixture of these qualities who once said, Education is some- thing I always think I have until I get more of it. This, I trust, has become your own philosophy as you pause momentarily on this high pinnacle of your de- velopment, and I congratulate you most heartily on your achievement. But I also earnestly trust that the philosophy of education and of life which you have consciously or unconsciously made your own during your college years comprehends certain other basic tenets — so basic, that without them, your philosophy would be shallow and meaningless. And these tenets I believe I can most effectively impress upon your minds and hearts by a quotation from a commencement address made by the Executive Vice President of Ford Motor Company, Mr. Ernest R. Breech, who, when speaking to another grad- uating class like yours, said: I hope that you will not concentrate exclusively on your hands and your head, important as they are ; but rather that you will remember also the supreme dimen- sions of your soul. You will find that it has inexhaus- tible resources for noble and exalted living which will deepen and round out this high adventure you are about to undertake. It will lead you to the only real security man has ever found — spiritual security. It will help you to hold fast to those ideals and principles which go to make up the good life. You have a long head start toward a life of service and accomplishment. Live it well ! With my very best wishes always, I am Most sincerely, A. R. Keppel
