Wl The debt which Catawba owes Dr. and Mrs. A. R. Keppel can- not be measured. For twenty years they have enriched the lives of all who knew them. The dedication of this annual is an all too insufficient tribute to the lives of two people whose unsel- fish service is a constant inspiration for those of us who have had the opportunity to come under their influence. It is with sincere humility, immense pride, and genuine love that we dedicate this 1963 SAYAKINI to our friends and Ca- tawba ' s faithful servants — Dr. and Mrs. Alvin Robert Keppel. T 1 N PRESIDENT- DR. A. R. KEPPEL - To the Members of the 1963 Graduating Class It is only right that you should feel proud over your accomplishment of having earned a bachelor of arts degree from an institution of higher education which itself has reason to be proud of its distinguished his- tory and its distinguished alumni. But, at best, such pride is unwarranted and extravagant unless it truly springs from an innermost spirit of abject humility. It was indeed a man who possessed such a mixture of these qualities who once said, Education is some- thing I always think I have until I get more of it. This, I trust, has become your own philosophy as you pause momentarily on this high pinnacle of your de- velopment, and I congratulate you most heartily on your achievement. But I also earnestly trust that the philosophy of education and of life which you have consciously or unconsciously made your own during your college years comprehends certain other basic tenets — so basic, that without them, your philosophy would be shallow and meaningless. And these tenets I believe I can most effectively impress upon your minds and hearts by a quotation from a commencement address made by the Executive Vice President of Ford Motor Company, Mr. Ernest R. Breech, who, when speaking to another grad- uating class like yours, said: I hope that you will not concentrate exclusively on your hands and your head, important as they are ; but rather that you will remember also the supreme dimen- sions of your soul. You will find that it has inexhaus- tible resources for noble and exalted living which will deepen and round out this high adventure you are about to undertake. It will lead you to the only real security man has ever found — spiritual security. It will help you to hold fast to those ideals and principles which go to make up the good life. You have a long head start toward a life of service and accomplishment. Live it well ! With my very best wishes always, I am Most sincerely, A. R. FRESHMEN FRESHMAN CLASS OFFICERS Sue Crouse, Secretary; Joan Staley, Treasurer; Danny Fesperman, President; John Golladay, Vice-President. Excitement filled the air as we, the Freshman Class, entered the Catawba College scene those beginning days of school in September. For the first few weeks we were the most popular class on campus ; events were even held in our honor. After awhile we were no longer new and were distinctly labeled the lowest of the underclass- men. As the year rolled on, our former feelings of be- wilderment, confusion, and uncertainty turned into confidence as we became quite familiar with our new alma mater and everything related to it. We were becoming an integral part college life. We look forward to summer vacation, but with the coming of next fall will anxiously anticipate our return to Catawba College. ■ ■■■■ ' ■ JEAN ADDERHOLDT Lenoir DENNEY ALBERTSON Riverton, N. J. SOPHOMORES SOPHOMORE CLASS OFFICERS Bettye Shoffner, Treasurer; Terry Wolf, Vice-President; Marsha Deal, Secretary; Brooks Doyle, President. Upon our arrival in September, we were not filled with the same excitement that is charac- teristic of all freshmen ; we felt an emotion of our own. How good it was to return to college a second year, to see familiar faces — some of which we were at a loss as to a name to identify with them. Being sophomores, we were now of- ficially upperclassmen — to the frosh anyway. It wasn ' t long before we were back in the rou- tine of life as students at Catawba College. As we struggled through this year we took time out to smile inwardly at the freshmen who were mak- ing many of the same mistakes as had we. The end of the academic year approaches and we realize that as the next year comes we will be returning, not as undecided and as unsure as before, but with more of a definite goal to which we will aspire through our remaining years at Catawba. u CHARLES ABERNETHY Salisbury DIXIE ANDREW Greensboro GENE APPLER Littlestown, Pa. Better not pocket that money, boy! JUNIORS JUNIOR CLASS OFFICERS Tom Golladay, President; Marvin Teer, Vice-President; George Pate, Treasurer; Faye Kerr, Secretary. September arrived and the routine of returning to college was continued. Once again it was back to the ole stomping grounds at Catawba, our home away from home where we have actually spent the major part of these past three years. Beginning to feel somewhat superior, classified as juniors, we did not look down on the underclass- men but were fully aware that our goal of ob- taining a college degree was half met. All of us had now entered our specific fields of study and were quite conscious of the rapidly approaching future. As the year closes many thoughts run through our minds : Next year we will be the leaders. Deep friendships have developed; can time outwear them ? K rfMH H -■° ; i ■ Pr J B l m j H d ■ Let me see, what else was on that test? ' ' I wonder what it feels like. ' m si Those in the educational block program meet outside on a warm fall day. Our lovely Miss Catawba as she is ready to enter the Christmas parade. Ken Money diligently studies in the library. SENIORS Ken Money, President; Kathy Boone, Treasurer SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS Brenda Thomas, Secretary; Brenda Goodson, Vice-President; Seniors at last! After three years of being underclassmen, we, the Class of ' 63, finally reached the top. Come to think of it, the time did fly. This is our last chance to leave our im- pressions at Catawba as undergraduates. Upon approaching graduation we have mixed emotions : an eagerness to leave our campus of fond memory lanes and approach future chal- lenges but also a dubious feeling of having to uplift our roots from Catawba and re-orientate ourselves in a new environment. Looking back upon these past four years, vivid memories are implanted on our minds of our many experiences had here at our alma mater. Each one of us is able to assert that he has gained something through his interaction with Catawba College. BONNIE MAXINE ADAMS Hellam, Pennsylvania A.B. Sociology, Elementary Education S.G.A. The Catawba Blue Masque is organized to pro- mote dramatic interest and appreciation on the campus and in the community. CHEERLEADERS Bonita Witmer Chief Cheerleader Nell Bruorton Co-Chief Cheerleader s FOOTBALL Coach Harvey Stratton, in his first season as head coach, brought Catawba College three wins, six losses, and one tie. The team was exciting to watch because of his new multi-pro offense. Ex- cept for a few bad breaks and a few mistakes, the Indians would have had a very impressive season. Ron Nicewonger and Bucky Pope won All-Con- ference honors. Ron Crouse was the nation ' s lead- ing small college punter. On offense the backfield consisted of Bill McDevitt, Bucky Pope, Ron Crouse, and Grover Smith. The players in the line were Mike Harris, Roy Diviney, Joe Zapotoczny, Andy Peretin, Charles Little, John Sanders, and Eddie Gomez. However, on defense the line con- sisted of Jim Triplett, Gene Appier, Ron Nice- wonger, Tom Bailey, Richard Kurnik, and Don Williams. The linebackers were Larry Beightol and Charles Belcher. The position of safety was played by Ron Crouse. The halfbacks were Jim Rose and Butch Moore. S E T V ( « 5 With most of the lettermen back again this year, Coach Sam Moir enjoyed a winning sea- son. As the season progressed, the Indians found that their main disadvantage was lack of height. This difficulty was overcome by playing with the desire to win. Co-Captain Al Johnson won All- Conference honors in the 1961-1962 season. The starting lineup of Coach Sam Moir ' s team was usually John Garrison, center; Eddie Rhodes and Al Johnson, forwards ; Jim Wade and Bucky Pope, guards. Tommy Childress and John White were substitutes for the starting five players. WSEBALL Coach Harvey Stratton ' s baseball team won fif- teen games and lost eleven games during the 1962 season. At the close of the season the Indians were in third place in the conference standings. Heavy hitting, sharp fielding, and the most im- portant factor of all, the will to win, carried the Indians through another fine baseball season. Cone Sons in 1870, he received a handsome clock. Some of these clocks are still ticking away. In addition to selling cigars and groceries for their father, Moses and Ceasar Cone sold cotton plaids. Seeing a great future in fabrics, they started the Cone textile enterprises as a selling m and commission house in 1891. They built the original manufacturing plant in 1896. m  rn ' I lllliTI ttOL What of Cone Mills Today? From these small beginnings has come one of the world ' s largest and most progressive textile firms. With 18 plants employing almost 13,000 men and women, Cone Mills today is the world ' s largest producer of corduroys, denims and flannels. Its modern printing and finishing operations are turning out a host of other fashion-right fabrics. Cone through its research and development activities is con- stantly seeking better ways to make better materials. Examples of Cone firsts in this country are the new, popular stretch denims and corduroys. To maintain its high standards, our company needs young people with initiative and intelligence.
