CATAWBA C LL6 6 G SALISBURY, NORTH CAROLINA A. R. KEPPLX PRESIDENT To the Members of the Class of 1957 Dear friends: You are, or at least soon will be, graduates of a Christian liberal arts college - an institution of which you may justly be proud. And if this college and you have measured up to their mission, then the follow- ing statement is one which describes not only the typical liberal arts graduate but in effect describes you . Therefore, read it and heed it carefully and under standingly. The liberally educated man has convictions which are reasoned, although he cannot always prove them. He is tolerant about the beliefs of others because he respects sincerity and is not afraid of ideas. He has values and he can communicate them to others, not only by word but by example. His personal standards are high; nothing short of excellence wi ll satisfy him. But service to his society and to his God - not personal satisfaction alone - is the purpose of his excellence. If this be you , and I trust it is, then let me say to you that you face a glorious future, and I extend to you my heartiest congratulations and my very best wishes. You may be sure that we who remain here will greatly miss you and will always be interested in hearing about your progress and your achieve- ments. Please keep in touch with us by letter and by visit so that the values of our mutual influence may not end now, but may instead continue to steady us and to motivate us to ever higher levels of usefulness and service. May God be your Counselor and your Sustainer. Most sincerely, President Page 18
