A. R. KEPPEL, LL.D. President To the 1952 Graduates of Catawba College, Dear Friends: Your graduation from this institution is an achievement of which you may justly be proud. Please accept my heartiest congratulations and my very best wishes. The diploma which you will receive represents documentary proof of the successful com- pletion of your college course of study. But significant as is this certificate, the real proof of your college experience is still yours to demonstrate. And such demonstration is not confined to four years or to forty. It is limited only by your entire span of life. 12 I

RDmmiSTRRTion The technical knowledge which you have gained here at Catawba will no doubt stand you in good stead in many ways. But, again, if such represents the sum total of your learning, your college experience has been in vain. My hope is that you have gained much more; and that in this intangible area of much more you have discovered and set for yourselves a task — a task worthy of a lifetime of service. The world today needs men and women who can think clearly and who can prove their compe- tence in their respective occupations or professions. But of a far more desperate urgency is the world ' s need for men and women who are honest with themselves and with others, who are motivated by the ideal of service rather than the lust of selfishness, and who are wise enough to seek out for themselves a cause great enough to die for and therefore great enough to live for. If I could leave with you but one thought worthy of remembering for all time, it would be this: Man by himself alone can achieve nothing of a permanent worth or even of transient signifi- cance. Therefore, if you would try to prove the worth of your college experience and if you really want your life to count for most, you must first and always believe in God and tune your life to His Will and His Way. Integrity, humility, and Christian courage must be your guide- posts and service to Him and to your fellows must be your ultimate goal. As you start on such a journey, I earnestly pray for you God ' s blessing and Godspeed. Most sincerely, A. R. Keppel President Raymond Jenkins, Ph.D. Dean of Faculty and Professor of English Donald C. Dearborn, Ph.D. Dean of the College and Professor of Mathematics Elisabeth R. Scranton, M.A. Dean of Women and Professor of History David J. Sessoms, M.A. Dean of Men and Director of Student Activities
