' ■■■' ■■■■■.•.• ' .■■■ESkaflSa To our frieniTOR. LIAM GREENE we After many years of toil, hardship, and perseverance, Mr. Greene has emerged as a leader in world government. Even though Mr. Greene may be engrossed in overflowing work, any student may approach him and seek needed assistance. An understanding nature, combined with the attitude of aiding his fellowmen. has made Mr. Greene beloved by all who know him. Verification of the great amount of respect that the students hold for him may be found in the crowded classes which our friend instructs. With all these complimentary attributes, it is only fitting and proper that the 1950 Sayakini be dedicated to the friend of all people, Mr. George William Greene. BPBHHOTC . ) s - ' ■■■' ■L N ■%- A. R. KEPPEL, LL.D. r reside n t To the Graduates of 19i As each successive season of the year presenj Bjst oL gt- is again made up, I have increasing difficulty umpreh jE - ' t-ib who are about to finish their work here at Catawba have mially been here a long enough time to permit such completion. It seems to me but as yesterday that many of you arrived here as Freshmen. Naturally, from your point of view, however, your college residence no doubt takes on a quite different time factor. It may seem to you, for instance, that it has been years and years since you first walked into the Administration Building and presented your application for admission. It is precisely that difference in perspective of which I wish to remind you. even as you are now about to leave Catawba College. Again, from your present vantage point. no doubt, your college diploma today means most. Next, perhaps, you now covet the STRATION securement of a good job which will provide you with a neat income. And having achieved these two objectives, you may today think that there is little more to be desired. It is not my purpose to minimize either of these goals, but it is my purpose, as you leave this college fellowship, to share with you life ' s real objectives as see them today from my vantage point. One ' s life, as I see it, becomes a successful, happy and worthy experience net by virtue of what one receives, be it a diploma or a job or just another lucky break. One ' s life is a success only in terms of what one gives, not in terms of what one gets. Service to others is the key to individual happiness, even as it is the key to the achievement of a just, orderly, and peaceful world. My prayer for you, therefore, as you face new and different experiences, is that you may find your life by losing it in service to your fellow men and to your God. Most sincerely, A. R. ' . . ,.■• ,,V11 Book Thr 31 118 ■ma - ' ■The 1949 version of football here at Catawba was a dismal one as far as records go, but raw courage and grim determination managed to shine through. Ending the season with a .500 average in regular season play, the Indians came through in the one that really counted by taking a 7-0 win over Lenoir Rhyne in the final quarter. Coach Robert Spangler, ex-Duke grid star, took over the reins of head football coach as Gordon Kirkland assumed duties as director of athletics. Congratulations are in order to them. Aided by the capable end coach Earl Ruth, line coach Marion Richards, and student coaches Jimmy Eanes, Perry LeFeavers, and J. C. McLain, Spangler led the club through one of their toughest schedules in history in addition to greatly improved conference competition. The final league standings found the Tribe in the identical position of last year ' s star- studded aggregation with a 4-2 family record. Supporting the national acclaim of our consecutive scoring record, Catawba ' s chief disappointment of the season came in the game against Wofford. Going on the field protecting a record of 89 straight games, the Terriers from Spartanburg, S. C. spoiled the Indians ' new mark. The consecutive scoring record set by Yale in the 1800 ' s was broken by Catawba in a 7-0 victory over Presbyterian during the ' 47 season. On Dec. 10, the Indians inaugurated their second bowl in four years by playing in the Pythian Bowl against Appalachian. Four seniors ended brilliant career in this 21-7 defeat — Lefty Gardner, Bill Greenland, Bob Gore, and Fred Fisher. Coach Gordon Kirkland Coach Robert Spangler Coach Marion Richards Coach Earl Ruth 119 fera Indians Maul A. C. C. The Tribe kicked off the lid of the ' 49 football season on September 17 with a rousing 39-0 victory over Atlantic Christian College at Shuford Field. Showing an excess of power for opening day, the forces of Coach Bob Spangler lowered the boom in the final period, scoring three times. Tribe Chills Flying Fleet On September 24, the Indians engaged Erskine for the first time since 1939 and came out on the long end of a 20-7 score. The Flying Fleet produced an excellent back in the form of Tom Limozinere but the playing of Bob Gore and Johnny Coble was a bit too much for the South Carolinians. Terriers Spoil Scoring Streak A powerful Wofford eleven led by triple-threat back Sammy Sewell succeeded where 89 other teams had failed — holding an Indian team scoreless. The scoring streak which had gained national fame is the new intercollegiate record could not have been ended by a better team. The Terriers scored two out of the first three times they had the ball and their su- premacy was never indefinite. The Tribe threatened twice, once with a first down on the four, but could not produce. Brewer ' s punt return from the Catawba 7 to mid-field was the offensive highlight of the game. Final: Wofford 14, Cataw- ba 0. Braves Dump Panthers Traveling to High Point on October S, the Indians ran up against strong compe- tition before they finally emerged the victors in their second conference tussle. The Panthers, still remembering their 107-0 victory over Pope Field the previous week, were rough when they had to be. After an early offensive threat by the Indians, the action remained on fairly even terms until late in the final quarter. Taking a Panther kick on his own 20, Homer Brewer wended his way 80 yards for the only score. The failure of the conversion was ignored with the memory of Brewer ' s elusive gallop. 120 RohfRT Bfi I Bill Billing mes Bowles Homer Brewer d —VJK- Fames Goodman Willi m Greenland Earl Henry ■Bill Hunsucker Bl IB I INLM R [OSEPH OXENDINE Charles Price Ronald Rigby Fast and furious action in the Lenoir Rbyne tussle. James Slate Apps Drop Redskins In Thriller Louisville Thumps Redskins The always powerful Mountaineers from Appalachian rose up and put the skids on the Indians ' conference hopes in a 12-6 victory at Winston-Salem ' s Bow- man Gray Stadium. The Boonemen put together an unorthodox end run and a weird pass completion for their two scores. The Indians looked good between the 20 ' s but lacked the final scoring punch. Louisville ' s vaunted football team dis- played an amazing amount of power both on land and in the air to turn back a fighting bunch of Indians 41-7. The Cards were held fairly even the first half, leading only 14-7 at intermission, but exploded for four touchdowns in the final stanza. Elon Spoils Tribe Homecoming Braves Reboun( j 0n Qullford A large homecoming crowd at Shuford Field on October 22 had hardly got comfortable when the Indians bowled over the Elon Christians to score. The Chris- tians came back to spoil the festivities, however, and walked away with a 20-14 scalping. Presbyterian Wins Squeaker A blocked kick was fatal as the Blue Hose of Presbyterian eked out a 19-13 victory for the third loss in a row suffered by the locals. The Tribe arose to the oc- casion and at the end of the third quarter, the boys from Salisbury were engaged in a tie with their highly favored opponents. Midway in the last quarter, however, Mc- Cutcheon went around end from the two tor the deciding touchdown. The Tribe showed some of the power of old as they downed the Guilford Quakers 19-12. Coble put on a one man show in leading his teammates to the victory, scoring twice himself and tossing to Brewer for the other tally. Gore also gave the home folks an offensive show in the final quarter. Tribe Scuttles Bear Dreamboat A pass from Bob Gore to end Bill Greenland gave the Redskins a much de- served 7-0 victory over their arch-rivals from Lenoir Rhyne. The final game of the regularly scheduled season was marked by excellent line play by the main stal- wart all-season, Lester Gardner. William STANFIELD William Taylor Hfnry Turner Jack Ward i W ■m Basketball The 1950 basketballers here at Catawba will never be famous for anything appearing in the record books, but the fight and stamina shown by the boys as well as their coach have been a thing of wonder and amazement. Cage-minded Coach Earl B. Ruth, who played his college ball at the University of North Carolina, piloted his young club through a rough year which 124 saw a great improvement in conference competition. When the smoke had cleared and the firing was complete, the Tribe showed a record of 12 wins and 11 losses in all games played and a 8-6 standing in conference play for the third place position. As in 1949 when the Indians won 20 of 25 games and the regular season champion- ship, the locals were eliminated in the first round of the annual North State Conference tournament. This year the damage was done by a fast and greatly improved quint from Elon who later lost cut in the finals to the Mountaineers of Appalachian. The Indians produced the loop ' s top scorer m the form of one Larry Graham, whose famous push shot was felt in every gym in the conference. Tallying a total of 353 points in 23 games, and add.ng 16 more in the tourney game, he averaged 15.3S in each contest. o Date Nov. However, in their stead such regulars as Henry Lineberger, Jack Ward, Larry Taylor, Paul Brendle and others were ex- pected to carry the burden. f The charges of Coach Earl Ruth finished second in the hot North State Conference race in 1949, losing out to Elon in a struggle which went to the last regular scheduled game before being settled. Entrants in tag football, volleyball, basketball, tennis, horseshoes, and Softball were numerous and the competition was keen. Basketball again proved to be the most popular. In all, twenty teams were entered equalling the record set last year for the total number of teams representing the various sections of the men ' s dormitories. The tournament had to be pushed aloog by intramural director Marion Richards, and in many cases as many as four con- tests were scheduled on a single night. The turnout for tennis was equally as encouraging. The pre-tournament favor- ites carried the spectators attention throughout and provided them with plenty of excitement. The spring sports schedule was brought to a close with the ever popular Softball double elimination event. Competition again proved to be stiff and the large crowds which attended showed their ap- proval.
