SCRANTON, M.A. Dean of Women To you, the Graduates of 1949, I extend my most hearty congratu- lations, my very best wishes, but not my farewell. For although you have finished your work here, you cannot actually leave Catawba behind because you are and always will be a part of it. Catawba College is not primarily a group of buildings; it is a spirit — a spirit of comradeship, of goodwill, of high purpose. If both you and your Alma Mater have done their work well, that spirit Mill become an indivisible bond that will not only keep us bound together in lasting fellowship, but that, moreover, will keep us bound to that greatest ideal of all — the ideal of service — a continuing service to our fellow- men and to our God. On such a life ' s mission I earnestly bid you God ' s speed. Most sincerely, A. R. KEPPEL fpPl met pen _A u (rod an (I J art il - ' inp Catawba ROBERT II. A year of your life is recorded here for your reminiscing. Remember it as a year of uncertainty. The world is confused. Leaders of the great nations are still seeking the elixir that will transform suspicions into trust and hatred into love. 90 In the midst of this turmoil, we at Catawba go right on living together, laughing together, and working together. We solve our problems with an ease that presupposes the ability to get along together. To capture for you this feeling of Catawba, we have reproduced on these pages varied illustrations that may help you recall it. This year ' s Sayakini owes its existence to the co-operative efforts of many students, which is in itself an example of how Catawba works together. The Staff systematically tackled the problems of publication. All of this was accomplished under the watchful eyes of our Advisors, who were ever ready to hear our problems and allay our fears. Coach Earl Rut! l!i Coach Marion Richards VSS SeB Coach Cordon Chubby Kirkland and son. Indian Gridders Coach Kirkland led his Catawba College football squad through its most hectic season in more than fourteen years, as the Tribe won five games, lost four, and tied The amiable Kirkland. aided by line coach Marion Richards, end coach Earl Ruth, backfield coach Dwight Holshouser. and student coach Ed Edmiston. began drill- ing his charges on September 15 for the toughest schedule in the history of Catawba football. Co-Captain Wilson Co-Caplain Greene Having won 21 of 24 games in 1946 and ' 47. including successive victories over Maryville. and Marshall Colleges in the Tangerine Bowl in Florida, much was expected of the star-studded braves when the ' 48 season got underway. Con- sidering the tough schedule and the injury jinx that hit the Tribe in its very first game, Indian followers can consider the past season somewhat of a success after all. A majority of the club ' s post-season honors went to hard-charging fullback Lee Spears, who led the conference in scoring with 104 points. This made him the third-highest scorer in the nation. Four other Braves were named on the Conference mythical club: Co-Captain Ralph Jug Wilson of Hickory, N. C: Art Claar of Bellwood. Pa.; and Paul Marklin of Mocksville, N. C. Lester Lefty ' Gardner, a stocky guard playing his third year on the team was missed on the All-Conference outfit, yet gained an honorable mention on the All-State club. While the Braves were dropping two games with- in the loop and losing possession of the North State Conference crown for the first time since 1941, they were adding to their national glory by scoring in every contest, thus extending their consecutive streak to 87 games. The Tribe broke a 58-year-old scoring record set by Yale in the late 1800 ' s when they pounded out a 7-0 victory over Presbyterian during the ' 47 season. Since then, they have extended the national mark to an almost unattainable high — 87 games. Have Topsy-Turvy Year .■■■. ■3 ., -_ Indians Baffle A. C. C. The Braves opened their 1948 grid campaign on Shuford Field by baffling their first North .State foe. Atlantic Christian College. 42-7. The Indians began early and had scored three touchdowns when the first half ended. Touchdowns were scored by Spears, Speacht (2) Linder. and Gore. Keydets Tronnce Tribe Coach Kirklan and s Braves could find no antidote for a little package of poison titled i n ° m . ason and Ragunas , when they traveled to Lexington. Va. for their annual battle with the V.M.I. Keydets and the result was a 28-6 thumping. The Braves only score came in the waning minutes of the game when senior guard Don ■' Nig Lambeth of Lexington N C snatched a deflected V.M.I, pass out of the air and raced forty yards for a touchdown. ' Braves Outhustle Panthers The Braves had to come from behind to defeat a fighting High Point Panther eleven in their second conference outing of the young year. With regular tailback Bob Gore on the sideline with a rib injury, the duties in this department were loaded on freshman Johnny Coble a blond youngster who had proved his football value while playing for Mt. Airy High School Deadlocked at 7-7 in the first half, Catawba roared back in traditional manner to score three times on the passing of Coble and the hard running of Spears, Speacht, and Ward. Beds kins Tie Terriers When the Redskins traveled to Spartanburg. S. C. to play the strong Wofford Terriers, there was little hope for victory. The game developed into a bruising battle of forward walls and ended in a 7-7 tie. Johnny Coble faked a pass and cut off tackle for 34 yards and a touch- down. Spears calmly toed the point. Apps Conquer Crown Willi W ■i The Appalachian Mountaineers outplayed the Braves in a game of break football in Winston-Salem ' s Bowman Gray Stadium to take the North State loop crown from Catawba. The 20-13 Appalachian victory was termed one of the biggest upsets in the annals of North State football. E 1 o n Feels Tribe Wrath to Burlington the next week, the Indians got mad at Elon s Christians Travelin_ pounded out a 35-0 loop victory. and Tribe Ipseis Presbyter ian Playing their hest game of the year, the Indians thrilled a capacity homecoming crowd in defeating their old rival from South Carolina. The Braves drew first hlood in the opening stanza when Co-Captain Bill Greene broke through to block and recover a punt on the Blue Hose 4. Spears made it a touchdown in two plays. Final score 21-6. Louisville Makes Bruising Debut When the Braves journeyed to Louisville, Ky., they met a team much larger and faster than expected. The game was not far gone when Louisville fans knew it would not be a runaway. Final score — Univ. of Louisville 33, Catawba 21. (iuilford Is Torpedoed The Guilford Quakers invaded Shuford Field with honorable intentions — they wanted to give retiring Coach Doc Newton a victory. They received a rough setback, 33-6. Linemen Les Gardner and Jim Goodman played possibly their best games of the year in stopping the Guilford backs. I . e ii o i r - II by u e (hill s I r i b e The Braves came close to having their consecutive scoring record halted at 86 games when they bumped against Lenoir Rhyne. Gaining possession of the ball deep in their own territory, the Braves set their sights on the L.R. end zone. Spears, usually the runner, turned passer and heaved an aerial to Speacht on the 35. and the Altoona Express covered the remaining 65 yards for a touchdown. The Braves lost. 16-6, yet they extended that national record to 87 games. t I MM fflSf w fc fer CIl Catawba College Baseball team — North State Conference Champions, 1948 Baseball The Indian baseball team successfully defend- ed its North State Conference baseball crown in 1948 by winning sixteen games and losing only three in regular season play. Only two starters from the 1948 club were missing when the Indians reported to new Head Coach Earl B. Ruth for drills this season — second-baseman Jake Almond, and catcher Lamar Dorton. The Braves were once again favored to take the loop crown. Bill Greene was expected to carry the major burden of mound chores, along with Joe Kelly, Lee Spears, and Jim Walser. The Indians play their home games in beauti- ful Newman Park, one of the most modern college parks in the South. Captain Jake Lyerly 118 V, 6 r w Leaping Lee Spears, Catawba fullback, in action. Intramurals Under the co-direction of Coaches Marion Richards and Earl Ruth, the ' 48- 49 season of intramural athletics developed into one of the most outstanding years of campus sports that the school has ever experienced. The entire year ' s schedule was heavily loaded with teams competing in tag football volley ball, basket- ball, horseshoes, tennis, and Softball. Intramural basketball this year set an all-time record in participating teams, public popular- ity, and competition. With twenty teams en- tering the hardwood contests, the season was filled with many close thrill-packed games. The weaker competition was quickl) elimi- nated in tennis, and the more expert men settled down to some close, hard-fought con- tests. Softball again proved its popularit) l at- tracting main teams and a surprisingly large number of spectators. Murko anrl King Wals 119 Catawba ' s Great Basketball Team lEaakt ' ibnll The year 1949 will be written in the athletic record books as a history-making year for basketball, for the Braves, who had never won a North State Conference cage championship, came through with flying colors in winning the regular-season pennant. A total of twenty victories and six losses are recorded in black and white, denoting the success of one of the greatest quints ever to wear the traditional blue and white garb of a Catawba team. Co-Captains Red Richardson and Bill Speacht zrn? ( i ■■■.■.-■.-. At first, the Redskins were given little chance to show in the loop proceedings. But when they opened the season with three straight victories before losing a close decision to the University of North Carolina, other conference clubs began to fear the classy quint which Coach Earl Ruth had built. The Braves won the loop chase easily, losing only two games — one an early season affair to High Point and the other a close one to Appalachian long after the title had been clinched. But the all-important tournament at Elkin was a different story. Going into the opening round the top-seeded and heavily favored club, the Braves had three strikes against them: They were trying to beat the upset jinx that the North State Conference is famous for: they were facing a tough little Guilford team that they had barelv spilled in two regular-season tilts: and two stellar players. Bill Speacht and Larrv Graham, were playing on injured ankles. They lost out in the opening round to Guilford. 60-55. and went home without a crown. But thev did accomplish something that no other Indian cage team has been able to do — they brought home a pennant. mm m mm i t eh E;irl Rulh The W.A.A. Cabinet.
