OF CATAWBA Dr. W. Augusta Laxtz Dean of Women Rev. John C. Peeler Dean of Men I am always glad to write a word of commendation and good will for the annual ' s staff. Too much praise cannot he given to the members for the hard work which they have put into this edition of the annual and their smiling patience under difficulties. It is a happy thenie that they have chosen for their subjejct — Campus life certainly depicts as nothing else can do the response of the student body to a college educa- tion. It pictures vividly the attitude towards intellectual culture and the refinements of life, the young man ' s attitude toward the co-ed and the co-ed ' s attitude toward the young man. As I write, a series of pictures float before my eyes, some of them most amusing, others of a more serious nature; but, after sixteen years of experience of Catawba ' s campus life, I can truthfully say that there is much to commend. The new name expresses just the relation we desire to exist among the students — a friendly attitude to each other and a loyalty to the good name of the college. W. Augusta Lantz. The Junior Class of Catawba College had a difficult order to fill in producing a Sayakini for the year 1941 that would equal or surpass previous editions. They made a good beginning in the selection of a most efficient staff. The order lias been filled iii a magnanimous way. The book is a beautiful, artistic creation filled with human interest and efficaciously portraying all phases of campus life. It will take its place in the- archives of Catawba history and will always be a cherished possession of the hundreds of Catawba students who are the fortunate possessors of it. Congratulations to the Junior (lass and its accomplished staff! John C. Peeler. '

-•■ ' - ' : .■ ■ ADMINISTRATION Dr. Howard R. Omwake President of the College Dr. Raymond Jenkins Dean of the College To my dear friends of Catawba College: I am sure you all join in hearty congratulations to the board of editors for the publication of this book. We are deeply gratified at the change of name, for now we have an annual whose very name signifies one of the most precious ideals for winch Catawba stands, the perpetuation of deep and lasting friendship. The contents of the book are such as will link happy memories with the faces of those we learned to know and love in the four years ' we spent on this campus. Because of the associations stimulated by the pictures, sketches and records, be- cause of the memories revived of long forgotten incidents, because of the freshening of friendships when we look at the pictures of classmates and schoolmates, this book, the Sayakini, becomes one of the most cherished volumes in the libraries you are beginning to collect. May I share with you an expression of thanks to the editors for the precious volume they have produced, and may I also etxend to you my heartfelt good wishes for success in every noble enterprise you may undertake here, or after you leave the halls of Catawba. Sincerely yours. Howard R. Omwake. I am glad to have this opportunity to congratulate the staff upon the artistic format and variety of material in this annual. If an archeologist of 2941 unearths this volume, he will behold, imaged here in happy beauty, a vital record of college life in 1941. The name of Sayakini, meaning friendliness, is well suited to this scrapbook as its pictures will in after years, like the old family album, keep alive the friend- ships you have made here. To the seniors this record of classes and organizations will ever be a cherished mirror of their bright college years. Raymond Jenkins.
