A SHORT HISTORY OF CATAWBA COLLEGE eATAWBA College is a denominational school founded by descendants of Reformed people from the North. In 1849, at an annual meeting of St. Matthew ' s Church in Lincoln county, the need of a southern school was discussed. The managers of the Loretz Beneficiary Fund which was named in honor of the Rev. Andrew Loretz, contributed to the cause and in 1851 Catawba College opened in the Old Academy Building in New- ton, N. C. Professor Charles H. Albert was elected President, and, to- gether with Professor H. H. Smith, took charge. A forward step was taken in 1880 when the institution became co-educational. After the close of the academic year 1922-23, the College was closed in order to give an opportunity for relocation and reorganization of the institution. It was reopened in September, 1925, in the new buildings at Salisbury, N. C. In its new home the College has made a brilliant beginning. Its physical plant and equipment are unusually complete; its faculty is the best ; its student body, even in the first year, was more than twice as large as ever before. Indeed, the future of Catawba College looks bright! M. BOGER. Page Twenty-one
