School Board And Administration Make Policies For Schools The school board and the adminis- tration under the direction of Dr. Del- bert L. Secrist and Dr. Robert D. Morrow make the policies for the Tucson School District No. 1. Dr. Secrist is president of the school board, and Dr. Morrow is superintendent of the school district. In the last twelve years 540,000,000 has been spent to improve education in Tucson. In order to keep up with the growing population of Tucson, 100 class rooms will have to be built a year, a new junior high school every 15 months, and a new high school every two years. It is expected that there will be between 80,000 and 90,000 stu- dents by 1971. During the past few years honor courses have been offered in the high schools. There are now about twelve areas represented in this program. During the past year between thirty and forty research projects were carried out to improve the special edu- cation and the courses offered for handicapped students. Although the Russian Sputnik seemed to coincide with the new graduation requirements, work to improve them had been started about two years before the advent of Sputnik. Dr. Morrow states, The Tucson public schools are gener- ally recognized as one of the outstand- ing systems not only in the western United States but in the nation as a whole. ,NS 7 fi' C , aff Vw' MA BH of us memr event We able Your with ' We fulfill We p ence the ai work, all di Pri a tea Worlc baske ball 2 becar now 1 years coach assist. was g of Ca in 19 Mr ployn all pe the e He a budge He is and studei the r make state.
