Castro Valley's Spartans opened their 4 Varsity Football season on a high Matadors. Quarterback R i c k Quintanal of twenty-seven yards--to Bob Kellogg, other, sixty-seven yards--to Gary Kerr bring the Spartans from behind at the to an 18-14 triumph. completing his first perfect season at Castro Valley High 1, varsity coach Don Rogers Walks across Spartan Field to hands with Canyon coach Roy Richardson. with a victory over the Miramonte two second-half touchdown passes-- Vaney 6 0 6 6--is Rick Quintanal just misses on the first extra point attempt of the season. Nineteen sixty-four marked the first time in six years that Castro Valley High School has bagged an H.A.A.L, championship and the first time in history that one school has won all three football crowns in one season. The varsity Q 9 won - 0 lost-0 tied 5 J. V. 4 7-0-1 J and Froshf8-0-OJ joined forces to take all H,A,A.L, honors with a combined record of 24-0-1. Led by All-League choices Tom Beck, Bob Kellogg, and Rick Quintanal, the Spartans scored 143 points Q 15.8 per game J while holding nine opponents to 71 points Q 7.8 per game J. Quarterback Rick Quintanal tossed eight touchdown passes during the season on his Way to the league passing title. Halfback- Fullback Tom Beck finished second in rushing with 548 yards gained and in scoring with 42 points. Over the first half of the season Castro Valley ran neck-and-neck with the Mt. Eden Monarchs, and when the two teams finally met in their sixth game it appeared that they would fight to a stand-off. In the game's last play Russ Swart intercepted a pass and ran it back 76 yards on the disputed last play of the game. C.V. Wins Upener Castro Va1ley's top man on the tackle chart, Tom Mar1erC78j, stands ready to pounce a Miramonte ball carrier.
