The Spirit of Guidance Reflections of the spirit of guidance are shown throughout our school by the close personal relationships that exist among the students and teachers. Operating a large school is a tremendous task, bu t the students, faculty, and the com- munity are indeed proud of the leadership of this administrative staff. We students of Castlewood High School are deeply indebted to the faculty for the leadership and guidance they have shown us in the past years. We wish to thank them for the precious gift of knowledge which they have bestowed upon us. The most vital aspect of the faculty is the responsibility to the welfare of the students. Having profited from the friendliness, sin- cerity, and guidance, the student can look for- ward to a successful future as Alfred Lord Tennyson has so aptly said, I am a part of all that I have met. ADMINISTRATION 14 15 Faculty and Curriculum Leading and guiding students in a way that wil l help them to be good citi- zens of tomorrow is the main interest of Principal John E. Carter. The SPIRIT of direction requires su- pervision not only during school but also at all school sponsored activities. The position of principal car- ries with it heavy responsi- bilities and solicitude. We feel that he carries out all these duties with utmost ef- fectiveness and we wish to express our sincere grati- tude for his constant under- standing. Mr. M. E. Campbell B.E. The Spirit of Organization Every second and fourth Wednesday is anxiously awaited, since this is our club day. Every student can belong to one club of his choice and be also a member of the Beta Club if he meets the specified requirements. Each organization is sponsored by a fac- ulty member who freely gave of his time to help prepare the student for the future in our world of competing, sharing, and working to- gether. Much enjoyment and appreciation are de- rived from some of the clubs, particularly the Art Club and the Drama Club. Leadership and citizenship are developed in our club ac- tivities. Certain projects are undertaken by the different clubs. For example, the Busi- ness Club has balanced its books by selling ball point pens and candy. Other activities have been devoted to selling fruit cakes and preparing the annual Christmas baskets for the needy families of the community. Organization is the very heart of school spirit; furthermore, it enables the students to realize the importance of working together to achieve their goal. ACTIVITIES SCA Was Host to Clinch Valley FIRST ROW: Linda Combs, Pamela Osborne, Judy Noe, Bill Keith, Jimmy Ervin, Roger Dean, Betty Jo Saddler, Debra Bolling, Benny Powers. SECOND ROW: Mike Burdon, Bobby Thomas, Linda Chafin, Bill Gillenwater, Roger Sluss, Johnny Taylor, Brenda Sue Hall. Gary Phillips, Roger Dishman, Helen Sue Burke, Phillip Couch, James Pur- cell, James Keith, Christine Fraley, Doris Keith, Judy Milton, Miss Roop, sponsor. The SCA has purchased an achievement award plaque, used to show the years the or- ganization has met the requirements for an achievement award. The Council attempts to have an attactive bulletin board in the front hall each month. When death occurs in the immediate family of any student, the SCA sends a floral arrange- ment. The flower fund is secured from vol- untary contributions of students. Also, the organization sends boxes of food, clothing and toys to needy families at Christmas. Jimmy Ervin, SCA p r e s id e n t , Jorita Prater, district chairman, and Gladys Roop, adviser, attended the SCA state workshop at Radford College in August, 1965. The work- shop seeks to develop and help students in the SCA program of their school. Castlewood SCA sponsors the assemblies and for the September assembly, they presented students who had attended institutes, workshops, and such conventions to tell of their experiences as to encourage other students to take ad- vantage of such opportunities. The SCA plans to sponsor delegates to Girls ' State at Rad- ford and Boys ' State at Williamsburg. They did so in 1965 with financial help from Cas- tlewood Lions Club and Lebanon Womans Club. 30 Jimmy Ervin, president of the S.C.A. presides at the first assembly. District Meet Castlewood High School was host to the Clinch Valley District Convention October 9, 1965. Twelve high schools from the counties of Bland, Buchanan, Russell and Tazewell sent about two hundred dele- gates to this meeting. The district chairman was Jorita Prater of Castlewood, district secretary Jimmy Ervin of Castlewood and Vice-Chairman John Buckles of Honaker. The theme of the convention ' ' First” was the same as the state theme for this year: Fulfill po- tential, Improve communication. Retain interest. Stress honor. Teach leadership. Kenneth Elsea, SCA State President, and Clark Fleming, Southwest Regional Representative, remarked on the theme. The guest speaker, J. C. Smiddy, Director Clinch Valley College at Wise, Virginia, urged the young people to make the world a better place in which to live. Delegates attended two of the five discussion groups. Mrs. Lewis Woolwine of Abingdon High School led the advisers in their discussion group. Mr. H. C. Fleenor of the SCA State Advisory Committee attended and termed the meeting an out- standing one. It is hoped that the delegates gained a great deal of information from each other to take back to their individual schools. Judy Milton, James Purcell, Miss Roop, sponsor, Jim- my Ervin, Roger Dean, Bill Keith, Gary Phillips, Bill Gillenwater are the SCA executive committee. Jorita Prater, Clinch Valley District chairman, conducts the general assemblies at the S.C.A. district meeting. Beta Club Belonging to the Beta Club is a privilege, as its membership is limited to those who have maintained high scholastic averages and served as leaders of the various activities in our school. In October of this year, twenty- one new members were inducted into the club, making it the largest Beta Club since the chapter was organized in 1950. Several members of the club attended the State Beta Convention which was held in Roanoke. All Betas help promote the welfare of the school and high standards of character among the students. Fredia passes the light of inspiration to old members, Fern Smith, Jane Carter, Alex Sabo, and Jim Ervin. Local parades and ball games were high- lighted by the band ' s excellence. Annual Staff Designs Jane Carter and Fern Smith work on the school seal. The yearbook staff of 1965-1966 accom- plished a great task this year by adopting a school seal for Castlewood High. Jane Carter submitted the idea of the meanings for the various symbols for the seal, while Fern Smith drew it. By designing the seal, they have provided future students with another Spirit of CHS . The seal tells the story of the school and its activities. The olive branch signifies peace of mind, which is acquired by learn- ing. Making up the most important part of the story, the center is composed of the Book of Knowledge . The first school session at Castlewood High School was 1950-1951, thus the 1950. The castle is surrounded by woods, representing the name Castlewood. Guard- ing the castle is a sentinel, which is the name of the school paper. Semper Praecox-- Ever Forward --is the motto of the school which shows that learning is advancement. Those who follow will ever be conscious of the spirit of wisdom, awareness, and vigor gained through the activities provided in our school. 44 School Seal The Annual staff of 1966 wishes to ex- press their appreciation to Mrs. W. O. Gib- son, their sponsor, for the assistance and cooperation she has given each member of the staff. Without her supervision our yearbook could not have been a reality. We have worked untiringly and diligently preparing the 1966 edition of the Castletonian. Many long hours have been spent on layouts, copy, pictures, and art. Even the smallest jobs have been vital. But the many problems of publishing this book were offset by the pride and achievement felt at its completion. We hope that through this yearbook the stu- dents can readily see and remember the Spirit of C.H.S. SEATED: Jane Carter, Elaine Farr, Jorita Prater. STANDING: Fern Smith, Brenda Dingus, Linda Sykes, Bobby Thomas, Linda Jo Steffey, Doris Keith, Mrs. Gibson, sponsor; Carter Phillips, Katie Salyer. 45 The Spirit of Competition Who could ever forget the school spirit that prevailed at our football games? The words, Go! Fight! Win! , came to mean more than just words to our cheerleaders; they became words of the student body, too. The Blue Devils entered into each com- petitive sport with a zest that swept them in- to the spirit of the game. The student body has faithfully supported the Blue Devils through both victory and de- feat with their outstanding school spirit. The avid CHS fans kept school spirit high and added livelihood to every game. Sportsmanship reigned supreme among the players and spectators at all the athletic events. Every student felt pride as his team played a good, clean game, win or lose. SPORTS Devils SENIOR FOOTBALL PLAYERS Harry Alderson, Ar- thur Turner, Dennis Hensdill, Terry Book- er, Roger Dean, Bill Keith, Jim Huff, Jim Ervin, Gary Phillips, and Raymond Halloway. Tommy Fletcher was named Coach of the Year after he led the Blue Devils to their first undefeated football season in the school’s history. The success of the Blue Devils was brought about by hard work, dedication, and a supreme effort by every one connected with the team. On many occasions the Devils proved the old adage A team that will not be beaten can not be beaten. The team was led this year by two out- standing boys. Captain Dennis Hensdill and Co- Captain Bill Keith. These boys along with Harry Alderson, Arthur Turner, Terry Booker, and Raymond Halloway brought honor to the team, their school, and themselves by being selected on the All-District VII foot- ball team. The Spirit of Liveliness Beauty and the feminine touch are captur- ed and held in the special events featuring our feature section. F rom Homecoming Night in the fall to the Junior-Senior Prom in the spring, these marked the nights of fun that will be remembered at CHS, Amid the ex- citement of decorating the floats, the an- nouncement of Homecoming Queen, and Homecoming Night, it was hard for us to re- turn to work and study after what seemed such a wonderful time. These activities taught us that social fun follows closely on the heels of work well done. We found excitement to spice our lives, and even more important than that, we learned to appreciate the benefits that our school has to offer. In that inevitable future, when school days become blurred in our memory, we will still cherish the special events at CHS. , FEATURES “Night of January 16th” SEATED: Jane Carter, James Ball, Lucy Gibson, Elaine Farr, Fern Smith, Tommy Talbert, Bill Litton. The low lights, the love- ly girls with their billowy gowns, adorned with colorful corsages, and their handsomely attired escorts made for a gala evening. Doing the Jerk, Swim, Watusi, and the Waltz to the music of the Vanguards added to the ecstasy of the night. Though we can never fully regain all the won- derful experiences of this night, the memories will remain with us. y Moments of Ecstasy Delegates Attend Various Jorita Prater, Linda Steffey, Fern Smith, and Jane Carter take a relaxing break after lunch at Natural Bridge on their way to the SIPA Convention at Lexington, Virginia. Elaine Farr, Gail Kiser, Mrs. Stella Gibson, sponsor; Linda Sykes, and Bobby Thomas at- tend a forum at King College, Bristol, Virginia. Throughout the year at Castlewood High, several students are chosen to attend and par- ticipate in different conventions and meets. To aid in the publishment of this year’s annual, members of the annual staff attended workshops at Washington and Lee University in Lexington and King College in Bristol. Del- egates to SIPA attended classes and lectures for three days, while those who went to King attended a day-long forum. Representatives to Girls ' State at Radford and Boys ' State at William and Mary were chosen by members of the 1965 Junior Class. Participants actually set up a model state government whereby all in attendance took part. Twelve Betas and sponsor attended the State Beta Convention in Richmond, exchang- ing ideas with clubs from the various sections of the state. Practice and hard work are required to participate in the forensics. The two dele- gates ' hard work brought about pleasing re- sults. The conventions proved to be very bene- ficial to those attending. Meet are Sarah Morris and Raymond Sproles. Brenda Dingus and Jim Ervin represented CHS at Girls ' and Boys ' State. Preparing to leave for the Beta Convention in Richmond were Sue Ring, Jim Ervin, Dolly Hall, Jane Carter, Brenda Dingus, Mrs. Carter, sponsor; Fern Smith, Linda Steffey, Jorita Prater, Alex Sabo, Kathlene Litton, Doris Keith, and Bill Keith. The Spirit of Achievement First and foremost in our fun-filled high school days is our classes. We play, we cheer, but we also study. Education is the main function of our school program. Most of our classes presented a challenge that we endeavored to master. The search for know- ledge has its difficult phases, but we patient- ly tried to perform each task. One of the great honors to which each stu- dent should aspire is the membership in the National Beta Club in his junior year. More and more students are realizing how much such an achievement may affect college ac- ceptance. Participating in forensic contests is an- other accomplishment. Delegates to Boys ' and Girls ' State receive practical experience in running a government. CHS players who are named to All-State teams are thrilled as the result of talent com- bined with determination and hard work. Musically-talented students are given op- portunity to march at the festivals held at various places. Honors such as these are the accomplish- ments of individual and collective goals. All this encourages the student to reach higher and higher toward greater goals. The Spirit of Cooperation First of all we want to thank all the many business and professional men who have made our yearbook, the CASTLE TONIAN, a reality. Without your loyal support, it could not have been done. As future leaders, customers, and homemakers of the community, we students are already looking for the best places to shop and the best products to buy. Advertisers are getting in their bids for our patronage by supporting our school and our yearbook. They have helped us and in turn we shall patronize their places of business. Also they realize that the CAS- TLETONIAN, with its wide circulation in so many homes, make them and their products better known through advertisement. Students, let ' s patronize these coopera- tive people.
