Through Many Doors Realizing the doors are closing for the 1963 school year as we juniors serve as ush- ers for the commencement exercises, we wonder who will be our ushers for 1964. We also wonder how many doors must we open and close during our senior year. Keep an open mind as you encounter new ideas and meet people with varied backgrounds. Keep your personal standards high. Take high school seriously, and you will gain the most from five of the most wonderful years of your life. Being a senior is a little frightening; be- ing a senior is a lot of fun . . . we hope . . . best of all, it ' s exciting, it ' s unique, anyway, it ' s the beginning to greater doors. The ushers are as follows: Kay Sluss, Garland Burnette, Peggy Hall, Bobby Joe Woods, Scotty Dixon, Bobby Bratton, Sue Stone, Jerry Glovier, Jackie Robinson, Shirley Dingus, Lois Taylor and Ruby Salyer. These five years will be forever cher- ished by all of us. 52 EATURES F “Rise and Shine” Comedy These scenes are taken from the com- edy, Rise and Shine,” which received a superior rating in the District Seven One- Act Play Festival at Abingdon, Virginia. Having won at Abingdon, the play was then eligible to go to the state festival in Charl- ottsville, Virginia. There the play again won top honors. Those featured are Larry Hileman, Bill Litton, Virginia Chafin, and Henrietta Jenkins. The comedy was directed by Mr. W. C. Robinson and Miss Connie Kilgore. 54 Wins Top Honors Phillip Sandford Grant-Bill Litton; Hepzibah Mercy Jones- Virginia Chafin; Henry Joseph Jones- Larry Hileman; Jane Morrison Jones-Henrietta Jenkins. 55 After the game-’ ' Oh Boy, FOOD! The Lions Club Carol and Coetta ride as Queens-to-be. Full of enthusiasm the crowd 1 W ' P ' A W u donated the scoreboard. The cheerleaders smile happily during the parade. WE THANK YOU ! boosts the Blue Devils. 57 Cheerleaders wave to fans. Homecoming One of the most important events to take place each year atC.H.S. is the Home- coming; and the Homecoming at our school is really something. It is gay, colorful, ex- citing, and all in all - it is actually breath- taking. This year various clubs worked diligently to make their floats look attract- ive and original. The band seemed to be at its best, the cheerleaders yelled louder than usual, and the spectators seemed slightly tense. The team played well; and last, but certainly not least, came the enchanted moment as the candidates for Homecoming queen, of the varsity and junior varsity squads, came floating across the field. Janet Culbertson, a freshman, is chosen by the junior varsity squad to reign as Homecoming Queen for 1963. Captain Grant Marshall crowns Queen Jan. 60 Queens Our Homecoming was held October 25 , 1963, and the Mighty Blue Devils defeated the Honaker Tigers 57-0. At half-time the Castlewood band gave an excellent performance on the football field. At this time, Rebecca Salyer was crowned Queen of the varsity team, and Jan Culbertson was crowned Queen of the junior varsity team. It is needless to say that both girls were radiant. Immediately following the game there was a dance held in the school gymnasium. The queens and their courts led the first dance. This was a memorable evening for all present, and no one can deny that our Homecoming was not a success. Rebecca Salyer, a junior, is chosen by the varsity squad to reign as Homecoming Queen for 1963. Captain Freddie Selfe crowns Queen Becky. 61 Floats Future Nurses Club wins third place. Floats Music Club Art Club Beta Club wins second place. All Books Aside With the end of school came the really big event of the year - the Junior-Senior Prom, which was held May 4, 1963, at the Downtown- er Lodge Inn, Kingsport, Tenness- ee. Dance music was furnished by Becky Hyatt and her orchestra. This prom was attended by more students than any other prom in the past. The couples parading around the pool under soft lights and seeing their reflections in the pool made this a night to be re- membered. Junior-Senior Prom Seniors Observe Dress-up Day A pretty table is something to behold. One of the most helpful and interesting phases of the home economics course is the planning and preparation of such an occasion. All eyes were on the seniors. There was no getting by because of the clicking of our heels. We wond- er what the juniors thought when they caught us slipping around in our stocking feet. Oh, our aching feet. Approximately eighty-nine sen- iors enjoyed refreshments prepared by the Home Economics Department. The Senior Class wishes to thank Mrs. Banner, Miss Mabe, and the home economics girls for the delicious refreshments, especially for those good homemade cookies. 66 SCA Presents Christmas Program The Angel Gabriel (Virginia Grubb) appears to Zacharias (Larry Hileman) to tell him that his wife Elizabeth would bear a son who would be named John. The Angel (Sue Dingus) appears unto the shephe rds to announce the, birth of Jesus. Bobby Bratton, Scotty Dixon, and Bobby Joe Woods were the shepherds. Miss Roop, Larry Hileman, Garland Burnette, Bobby Bratton, Scotty Dixon, and Bobby Joe Woods make plans for the Christmas program. Everyone en- joyed The Nativity very much. Bill Litton, Jackie Robinson, and Garland Burnette play the part of the wise men bringing their gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh to Mary (Linda Adams) and Joseph (Scotty White). 67 BEST DRESSED Sammy Jessee Amelia Jessee BIGGEST FLIRT Connie Smith Carroll Holbrook Senior Superlatives MOST VERSATILE Scotty White Doris Minton MOST SCHOOL SPIRIT Pauletta Wood Richard Justice MOST COURTEOUS Joyce Bise Dean Kiser CUTEST COUPLE Yolanda Carty Bobby Joe Woods of 1964 TYPICAL SENIOR Bobby Bratton Sue Dingus TALLEST and SMALLEST Sue Stone Harold Thomas Hall BEST PERSONALITY Dodie Bartee Kay Sluss MOST DEPENDABLE Shirley Dingus Bruce Sproles MOST INTELLECTUAL Karen Chaffin Freddie Selfe FRIENDLIEST Charlie Osborne Jeanette Phillips CTIVITIES F. Since the shorthand class was made up of twenty-five girls, someone came up with the idea of having a dress-up day. By observing this, the girls realized that to be well-groomed is as important as to be efficient. The girls wore pretty dresses, skirts and sweaters, and white blouses, heels, gloves, and other matching accessories. Janice Horne, Gail Salyer, Shirley Dingus, Connie Smith, Patricia Amburgey, and Joyce Rise type from notes. 76 Secretary Dress-up Day Charlotte Jessee, Ruth Perry, Jewell Skeens, Peggy Hall, Gaye Patrick, Helen Ball, and Doris Minton take short- hand dictation from records. How Big Are Your Plans? A great American once said: “Make no little plans. There is nothing in little plans to stir men’s blood. Make big plans. Once a big idea is re- corded, it can never die.” How does it apply to you? How big are your plans? Of one thing you can be sure. If the plan toward which you ' re working does not keep you interested, and fill you with excitement at the pros- pect of its accomplishment, your plan is too small. What is it you really want to do? Why don ' t you do it? Make big plans and work to their com- pletion . . . and be sure to complete your education. “With every good wish to you for a happy, productive life.” Smile . . . . And behind each there lies many opportunities. Some open always, none of them always closed. What ' s inside? we asked and walked through. Well, what? We can ask ourselves now. What? Now that we ' ve opened some of them and gone in; come out and gone in these five years. We know it was something of ourselves we found and that within something of ourselves stays. Anyway, all at once we knew a little bit about why. We were out from under the suffocating mass of books. There was a direction to go, a way to do it, and we knew the way. We had learned. There was the door, the handle to turn, the latch to lift--and all these years we had been finding, learning, acquiring, filling our pockets with keys. Already the doors of tomorrow are opening. Through how many shall we pass? 144 SENIOR DIRECTORY ALDERSON, LUTHER Library Club 1; Tumbling Club 2; Pep Club 3,4.
